Thanks David, interesting listing.....that locomotive resembles the Crown that we run, not a Port Huron. Even though I am a non Case expert, I doubt the "1900 Case" as it looks to have a buttstrap boiler and steel stack....
This line makes me wonder even more...."PROXIBID ITEMS TO BE SOLD FROM PICTURES" Sold from pictures??? Beth |

I doubt that the loco is a Crown Metal Products engine. I'm not sure, but don't think that Crown built anything bigger than 36" gauge. It is most likely an adapted / retrofitted industrial engine built by Porter, Vulcan, etc. for a mining or other industrial trackage operation. 42" is a bastard gauge which is normally not used except in industrial and mining sites. Standard gauge is 56.5" and "normal" narrow gauge is 36".

Beth,
I did a little closer reading on the auction site. The location of the auction appears to be some sort of parish center. The items listed as "Proxibid" will not be taken to the location of the auction, probably because they are too big. I don't know why they don't just have the auction at the location of the larger items, unless there are several different storage areas .Frank W. |

42" was a common mining size in West Virginia. H.K. Porters were built in Pittsburgh, PA and they built a lot of neat little engines. I grew up South of Pittsburgh in WV, so I like H.K. Porter engines. Here are some links I have found in the past.
This one was actually an air engine that the owner put a boiler on. http://www.steamlocomotive.info/valbum.cfm?display=3874 I like this one also. http://www.fairnet.org/agencies/tvrr/tvrr.html This one is at Agrirama. http://www.steamlocomotive.com/florida/rr3.jpg My favorite. http://www.steamlocomotive.info/vloc...fm?Display=182 http://www.steamlocomotive.info/valbum.cfm?display=182 More Porter info. http://www.over-land.com/rrporter.html Jeff Smith Last edited by Jeff Smith; 06-04-2007 at 02:57 PM. I knew I'd spark some response......Yep, Porter makes more sense....now, where's Colin to beat me up over the Case?!?!
Frank, Yes, I understand the larger pieces are stored off site, I'm just really curious as to whether or not those pieces can be inspected? My perception of this sale is that the auctioneer doesn't know what he is selling.... Beth |

Beth,
Sorry, it took me three times reading the listing before I caught on that these were stored elsewhere . Sometimes I can be a little dense. They way the note about inspections reads to me, the public inspection is only at the site of the auction and the items which are not there will only have pictures available for review. Perhaps someone would have to contact the auctioneer to get a look at the off-site items .

Is this the locomotive that was for sale in IMA around 1994-1995 from some where in TN and the father had passed away and the son was selling it, a 6hp Russell and a 50hp Peerless?

The gentleman who had the locomotive as well as the Russell and Peerless was named George Morrison, and he lived in Maryville, TN (we pronounce it "Mareville". As best as I could tell, that Porter was with an original boiler. He also had a Shay engine as well. He ran them on a oval track behind his house.
Sure wonder what happened to the tractions...anybody know? |
