Talking Just Got my puter back!

It had viruses that the guy we take it to (he is good, and cheap, and we run scans daily)had never heard of. He had it for a week and a half, even took it home from his shop and worked on it. when we finally took it in it was putting 2's in when you typed. He only charged us for one hour

Your right about that Farquhar........

www.avast.com is free to home users.
I use it at home and pay for the business version for the shop.
NOTHING has gotten past it AND it is ONLY an anti-virus application..........NOT a "suite" with a bunch of built in crap to slow your computer to a crawl.......
A business next door bought a new computer which came preloaded with a trial version of McAfee "Security Suite" (I think that's what it's called) and they have a satellite modem.
Well.....it's secure all right.......
It's SO secure I could not access the internet nor configure the "suite" permissions to ALLOW it to connnect...........
I downloaded Avast, uninstalled McAfee and it was off to the races.........
I'd ALMOST kill for 1.5 megs down..........

Cody said he was using sbc yahoo antivirus........Probably a good idea to NOT use it?

Same thing happened to me. My computer is about 3 years old. It came with McAfee security and I liked it. When the term on the security expired I let them sell me a "suite" and the next day I couldn't do a damned thing I fought it all day, thought it was my provider. Being the computer illiterate, hard headed old fart that I am, worked till I figured it out. Had McAfee give me a refund, uninstalled everything except the basic package, and I was back in business. It expired again this month, looked over all the packages they had to offer, their advertising sure makes the more expensive "suites" sound good, but if you read the info for each product side by side the more advanced packages offer very little except trouble. I got the Virus Scan Plus, which is the cheapest one. Still have to have a couple of features turned off to allow Outlook to work.

I just thought i'd mention on my computer i run Nortons internet security. yes it is a little pricey but i'd rather pay that price then to have my puter sent in to work on and be charged 4 or 500 hundered doll hairs. i have ran Nortons for 2 years now, one year on my old computer and one year on my new one i have now, going on 2 years, and it has done a pretty good job of keeping my computer clean and virus free. I would reccomend Nortons intrenet security to anyone. a little pricey but it pays for it's self over and over again. i think in stores Nortons runs about 65 doll hairs maybee more acording to were you live, maybee less. i use to have all kinds of computer problems! you name it, i had it or was going through it, but now with Nortons intrenet security, i aint had a lick of trouble, not a bit! and at the price of a brand spankin new computer that run me close to 2 grand, i cant AFFORD to have computer problems!

I had Norton on my back up computer. I renewed it last year and they sold me a "suite" (fancy package) and it was superb I was considering installing it on my current computer instead of McAfee, but was afraid there would be problem with it fighting old files left after removing the McAfee. (chicken, afraid my computer would blow up, cluck cluck)

I think that would be computer jibberish for...Somethings wrong lol

i could give you my honest opinion if you want it, it's free so i guess i'll say it.
HONESTLY i would dump ALL of those "computer protection" programs that wasnt ORIGINALLY programed into your computer, deleate the files and remove the programs, then go out and buy Nortons intrenet security. i tell ya i havent had a LICK of trouble with nortons. just make sure it is and says Nortons intrenet security. you dont need anything but that program. it takes care of everything and i can almost promise you wont have another computer problem. but that is just my free advise. the minute Nortons gets into your computer, it gives the bad things in your computer the "boot", tosses all that junk out and then protects you from incomming and potential threats and dangers. keep it updated aswell and i almost promise you'll have a healthy computer. it does not, on the other hand, protect you from computer physical break down, say if something in your hard drive broke. thats just mechanical. (i guess) i dont know what computer guys consider mechanical. lol

Assuming your computer is operating normally otherwise, uninstall diskeeper and your problems will be over.
Diskeeper is not part of the Windows operating system.
Diskeeper can actually CAUSE problems as it's always fiddling with the system files.
That's, pretty much, the jist of the discussion at this link:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=197348

As for the CHKDSK/F........FIRST of all F is not the hard drive unless you have a REALLY WEIRD SETUP........
All the utilities the average user needs are in the operating system.
Open MY COMPUTER; right click the C Drive and select PROPERTIES; TOOLS and then ERROR CHECKING. A new box will open........check BOTH boxes and then START.
At your next boot Windows will do 5 separate utilites automatically and CHKDSK is one of them.
Depending on how fast your 'puter is this willl take a while...or longer...
It's a good idea to defrag after running the Error check as well.

Craig:

I From my old PCDOS days, the /F switch means to fix any lost clusters and chains and convert them into temporary files so you can see if they are something you might want to recover.

I think that /F just compares the two master directories and FATs to see if anytyhing is shown in the FAT that doesn't appear in the master directory.

I might be wrong here and probably am!

Take care - Elden

Eldon, you may be right.............but IF he's running XP the file system is NTSF..........that's not to say SOME files on other drives might be FAT though......
In any event, MOST of these addons and so called "optimizers" are only good for the people selling them......
Don't ask how I know..................
NOT LOL.............

Cody

I am not familuar with XP but try this, get into your program files and find accessories. click and a list should come up. Look for disk defrag. Click that and you should be able to defrag the computer.

Works this way on Windows ME.

Let me know if it works that way.

Jim
