Question Fairbanks Morse Magneto

I have a quick ? that I'm sure is simple to someone who knows the answer. I just purchased a magneto and gear from Marks Magneto for a 1 1/2 Hp engine. The question is the gear does not have a mark on it, so how do you line it up to fire in time.

Is this an ignitor fired engine with the sumter rotary mag, or is it a spark plug engine with another make of mag, such as an FM R or J series?

If it is a high tension mag, rotate it until you feel the "Hard spot", this is where the mag fires or actually, just after the hard spot...mark the tooth that is in the twelve o'clock position with some red paint or something so you can keep it straight up...Now, with the mag off, rotate the flywheels until the piston is a few degrees before top dead center and hold it there. Now sit the mag on the bracket with the mark straight up and bolt 'er down. you should be within one tooth of where you mant to be. Plus you always have a quick reference to look at and see that it is in time...Anyway,that's the way I do it, and it has never failed me. I don't pay any attention to timing marks, they may be wrong!

It's a spark plug engine magneto type FM.
