this is just a shot in the dark, but it i think it may be from a early truck or tractor. how many speed is it?

Probably an early tractor, as it has the pinion gear mounted on the output shaft.

the case looks like aluminum, if so it is probably not too old 50s-60s although some cars had aluminum blocks in the 20s. I would also say it is off a tractor mower or fork lift, not an auto. Andy
