Bumping this one back up to the top.

I have the same unit with the same problem. The Onan part number is 160-1334. This is the same part number in the AJ series of air cooled units and is just about impossible to find.

Lots of looking around has led me to the Wico WF magneto that looks similar to the Onan parts catalog drawing. Is there any way to know if one of those would work? And if it would are they as rare as the Onan branded one?

Our MAJB ran fine, met our power needs until the magneto went out. I'ds really like to fix it if possible and I am going to guess so would the original poster of this thread.

I picked one up from a local onan dealer a few months ago. They had to order it from the factory. I called Onan direct because the price the dealer gave me was really high. Onan told me they had 3 left. I guess someone got the other 2 already.

That drawing you posted looks mighty close. I wonder if it is close enough...

Which Onan dealer did you find yours at? I have called my local (Houston) center and all they say is that there are none in any inventory that they have access to with the implication that they look nationwide. I have to believe that there are a few sitting on a shelf somewhere.

Greetings:

Contact Mark W. in parts @ 1-800-642-0085
-or-
mark.a.wolsfeld@cummins.com

Mike Q. can research anything for you in their archives.

Parts are open 7am - Midnight. Mark works days and knows me by name. They will ship, or drop ship. There is no charge for ordering anything that will go to the Center here, or I assume to another N-Power on their regular weekly shipment.

If Mark can't find it, it most likely is not going to be found -- easily. He can access other sources also.

Regards;

Peter

I called Cummings/Onan. They said that they had 3 left. I ordered it through II Tony's Marine in Destin FL. Some one may have one some where but is this one goes bad, I think it will be either a suitable sub or find someone to repair it or just get a new genset....

Hi,

Like the previous person...I am also looking for a magneto for my 3kw Onan MAJB GenSet...I have called all over including Onan and the parts were discontinued in 2006. The part number is either: 160-1334 or 160-0155. Any leads or potential replacement, rebuild?

Thanks,
Walter (the current date is March 16 2010)

I had the same problem, but worked around it by using a standard Mercruiser coil instead. It was simple, mount the coil on the head bolt and use a standard car coil wire. I used the original points for trigger but ran the wire thru 200w ceramic resistor(from Radio Shack) to stop the points from arching so much. I got power for the coil from the hour counter thru a relay so it shuts off when you hit the switch off. It's been working for a year now for me...

It looks to me as if the coil from a Clinton/Early Tecumseh under flywheel magneto might fit the core of you guys Onan coil. I have used this coil to replace the coil on a 7 HP/K-161 Kohler engine that the coil was No Longer Available from Kohler. The upside is this coil is still available NEW from aftermarket small engine parts suppliers. The Tecumseh P/N is 30560A. Stens P/N is 460-063. Retail from Stens is about $40.00. I have several old junk Tec. engines that a coil could be removed from for experimentation. I am think about trying this on a Briggs Model ZZ I have that has a bad coil.
Could someone measure the Outside diameter of the coil and the size of the square in the center of the coil or the size the square on the core? This would give me an idea if this would have a chance of working.
I also developed a coil conversion for the Briggs Magnematic magneto that was used on the older Number series engine. There is a write-up on this in the Nov. 2005 issue of GEM so I have a history in this.

Here are three picture of the coil I was speaking of. The first is with mounted on it core. The square hole the core goes through is .375". The coil is an 1.640" in diameter not counting the KNOT where the spark plug wire enters and it is 1.065" tall.

Mercmaster, I'm interested in your replacement coil idea for my 1MAJ. The square hole in my coil is 5/8". What is your idea - Tecumseh?

You could also try Sears Direct Parts. I have found some pretty old stuff through them.

Since you core is 5/8 inch square you would need to trim a 1/8 of a inch from all four sides.
I trim the core down on the Briggs letter series magneto to install the Tecumseh coil. The engine does not seam to notice as once you have the right spark plug gap, .025 inch on the old Briggs engine the will start on the first to third pull of the starter rope.
This is one of those deals in that WHAT YOU HAVE IS BAD, You CAN NOT hurt it trying to fix it.
If you would be interested, I will modify your core so a Tecumseh coil will fit.
I keep NEW Tecumseh coils in stock.
