Need advice on set up for the cooling tank on a 2 h.p. verrtical IHC Famous. Early model, no water pump. Screen cooled. Should bottom of water tank be raised to level of water input to the block or is a check valve used with the water tank set level with base of engine?

With no water pump you can not use screen cooling, you must use a tank. the top of the tank would have to be tall enough so the water can be as high as the top of the head. maybe someone here can give you the dimensions of the tank. Bob

The IHC Moguls which use screen cooling have no water pump and they work quite efficiently. The body of water is higher than the cylinder as you can see in these pictures.

Yes you could use screen coooling, but you would have to have the body of water verry high on a 2 h p verrtical IHC Famous. A tank was used on the early IHC engines with no water pump.

I have a 3hp vertical and a tank that is 56 inches tall and 12 inches across would work fine. Im not sure how much smaller a 2hp is than a 3hp, but it will give you something to work with. From what i can found oridgionaly they didn't use any screen cooling just a large tank to cycle the water.

I have a 1907 8hp IHC Famous engine with a cooling tank and water pump which is all original and the pump is belt driven. A cooling tank is different than a screen cooler as no screen was used in the tank cooled and is earlier than with a screen. The pipe from the block came back to the tank and has a series of holes drilled in it to drop down on some trays with holes in them to drop back into the tank.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I will add a pump because I like the looks of a screen cooled engine and I have the tank and screen. It came with the engine. Any ideas on type of pump I can use and set up; belt, gear, etc.?

When A Mogul screen cooled runs it has to boil the water so it will go up the pipe to the cooling tank.it does it in spurts. The Moguls used kero. for fuel so they liked running hot so the screen tank isn't a problem. You could belt a pump off of the crank shaft with some kind of skinny pulley and a round leather belt or go find the newer side plate, pump bkt, pump, ecc strap, and add the ecc to your cam gear.Rob

Hi
I think that there is a picture with this that will show you the tank I made to cool my engine and one for another famous 2 hp. the water is cool enough after a days run that you can put your hand in it comfortablely. It is made of 8 " well casing and 1/8 " plate. It bolts to the 2 engine head studs. If I can be of any further help just contact me Bob out west on the high desert |

Bob:
Thanks for the reply. However, the picture is too small to see any detail and I have not been successful in getting it to enlarge. Any suggestions? E.C. Mims |

Befor you start looking for waterpumps be sure your engine is set up to use one. Some early thermol syphan engines don't have the cam lobe that works the eccentric strap.

Changed my mind. I will restore it as original , with the cooling tank and no pump. Received some good advice on keeping it original.
So now, I have an extra screen cooling tank if anyone is interested. |

E.C. - I have a 2HP vertical that never had a pump and I want to restore it this winter. I'd be interested in what you come up with as being original. If you could pass on this info. to me I'd be grateful. My email address is <langer5@sympatico.ca> Thanks, Larry.
