I've seen 371's, or 471's in LA's, at some of the Case expo's, about 10 yrs ago. You might try contacting the folks at the Case Heritage Assoc., or the Case Collectors Assoc., one or both might be able to give you more info on who has done these conversions in the past.
I'mn not sure if either group has a website, though I'd imagine they do. |

Don Livingston had a LA with a 471 for sale a few years ago. He may still have it I don't know. He is a member here, but I can't remember his handle. He may be able to get you what you need.
Good luck and please keep us posted. Paul |

Here are a couple pics from the Kalamazoo Valley show of an LA with Detroit power. It was a very clean looking tractor, and I wish I had been there to hear it run. I have no idea on the adapter, but I have also seen an International M-TA converted to 2-71 power, so it can definitely be done! No pics of that one unfortunately.
Good luck with it, as it should be a screamer.

Can anyone please inform me of the history of the 3-71 in the LA? Did a company make a conversion kit that people would buy and build them or did a company make the complete tractor and sell them. I have seen one at the Rantoul IL. show that states that the 3-71 LA was built buy John Deere and that they used them for testing purposes.
We have one and I can say that it is a pretty clean install and not a lot of hacking and cutting. Thanks for the help!

I sent the start of this thread to a friend of mine who is very knowledgeable on Detroit Diesel and he could not reply directly so he asked me to post the following. I anyone would like to contact him just pm me with your email address and I will forward it.
I have GM Diesel advertising from the 50/60s that show a Detroit in a Case LA .But that link that Kris Golden is a 6-71 T , factory turbocharged so it's somewhere near 300 HP and 900 ft.lbs. of torque . They won't let me reply directly ,so you can do it in my behalf . And no ,there are no ready made adapters fo mating parts, however I used to have a Jimmie Diesel sheet on a 2-71 installation in an F-20 , plus They did make some kits to put the 2-71 in Farmall Ms . I drove a 4-71 powered LA Case in a tractor pull in Sturgis, SD several years back. I don't remember the owner's name... These were produced by Egging Machine - I believe it was a machine shop that would take a new LA and do the conversion and the tractor was sold this way through the Case dealer and, as such, qualifies as a stock tractor for antique pulling. I think, not for sure on any of it and going on what I remember from the tractor pull. Pulled from another forum: "I am only aware of only 1 Case LA that was sold brand new with a Detroit engine, but this was with a 4-71. A friend of mine owns it now and he also has the documentation that verifies it was sold new like this. There could have been others however though, I just don't know. The NATPA has allowed him to pull with this tractor, I believe in division 2. I own a Case LAI with a Egging converted 3-71 Detroit, but my conversion was done several years after it was new. There was also several other companies, that did these conversions. Whether you could pull them or not would depend upon the pulling association " and: "Egging Cab Co. in Gurley Neb. used to do the conversions." And a picture: 3-71 Detroit LA |

A couple of weeks ago there was a 3-71 LA for sale on YTMAG. It may still be there. My grandpa ran LA's for a while. He was seriously contemplating having one converted, but he ended up having a barn fire and his LA was inside. He ran diesel tractors after that. I have that LA now. I'd sure miss the sound of that 408 cubic inch 4 cylinder pulling the plow. When my grandpa bought this LA he drove it from the dealer 45 miles to the farm. Gas was cheep back then!
Good luck with your conversion. It sure would be fun to see your progress! Paul |

On a side note (read a little unrelated), there was a cobbled together WD-40 with a 4-71 in a bone yard in ND a few years ago. I stopped and looked at it. It had a TD-40 radiator on it and was stuck, but complete. I'd sure be interested in the history of it. Whoever did it seemed to have done a pretty fair job.

There's an M with the Sheppard Diesel conversion for sale in Indiana on the 24th of October. I think it's the Parker auction? There's a topic about it in the lugs and cleats section. It's an Aumann auction too.

As mentioned above, call Don Livingston. I know he has literature and maybe even have some drawings on the conversion parts.
