Lindsay Books has a number of good books on blacksmithing, building forges, and just about any of the "old" arts. Their site is www.lindsaybks.com. They are good folks to deal with. You should find something you'll like.

The art of Blacksmithing by Alex W Bealer is a good book to start with. It can be purchased at Books a Million. They will probably have to order it. It is cheap enough and very informative to start with. Lonnie Grissom

One of the best books on blacksmithing that you will ever find is County Blacksmithing by Charles McRaven. This book is out of print but you can still get a reproduction of it. I understand that Mr McRaven has another book out with about the same information in it but a different name. I don't remember what that book is called.

This is not a book but a website with two forums--go to Google search, anvilfire.com, I'm feeling lucky, this will take you direct to the site. Has FAQs, projects, discussions, sometimes the forums go out into techno-smith but a lot of honest discussion otherwise, lurk or contribute. I also believe they have book reviews.
David Hughes rebuilding a 1927 IHC M 3 hp, 1 1/2 hp Sta-Rite, 2 1/4 hp Galloway also rebuilding a Champion #400 forge blower and building a second forge (the first forge, using a brakedrum, was somewhat less than successful or satisfactory) |

I have "Practical blacksmithing" Compiled and eneitied by M.T. Richardson. It is a series of 4 volumes (Get part one and two) that was originally published between 1889 and 1891. With some of the other books listed here, I have found it to be valuable for what I do.

Lorelei Sims book is probably the first book I would recommend- It is much easier to follow as it uses photos instead of drawings. Alex Bealers book is great (also generally found very cheaply- I think that I paid less than $10 with shipping for mine).
anvilfire.com is a very good resource but the running dialogue instead of a forum form makes it kinda hard to follow or search. A better site for me is iforgeiron.com (aka IFI to members)- much easier to use and generally friendlier to boot. Other good books; new Edge of the Anvil, Metal Techniques for Craftsman by Oppi Utracht (hard to find generally but a good general book on all forms of metal work including metal spinning, coppersmithing etc.). Another EXCELLENT book is A Blacksmithing Primer. Cant remember the author though. Sean |
