I don't think it is that big of a engine but it sure sounds like it might have a few horses inside. Maybe even a few turbo horses? I hope they don't find that guy in the barn passed out laying beside his engine one day. The building appeared to be closed up with the exhaust running inside. Not a good idea. Maybe that was his first time running it?

May be a Waukesha. LeRoi built engines that big but I think all of their 8 cylinder ones were V style.

The engine is a Sterling. It was used to pump water in the town of Danville, Ill. I would say it is a very large engine being how it is not supercharge and produces 850. H.P. It is about 7 1/2 feet tall and 12 feet long and it has a electric starter. I don't know if it was 12 or 24 volt. I can't really remember seeing a bigger engine like this that runs off just regular gas and is naturally asperated. I know there are some out there that are bigger but this one still impresses me. I also like the response it has and the way it sounds when it idles, sounds like a radical cam. It is fun to watch, listen and feel run. The building it is in was open about half way on both sides. If you want to see it go to Skinner Farm Museum the 3rd weekend of August. It is located 5 miles west of Perrysville Indiana. Thanks for watching, Fred

I did find out more today. During the war this engine was slated for use in a submarine.
They started to use diesel engines and this one didn't get used. I guess 2 of these were used in each submarine. Well it ended up at a water pumping company in Danville. I imagine it has just about been used up. It still sounds good to me and I hope to make it there and hear it run this year. ![]() More movies are at : http://www.youtube.com/pileofiron |

Yes, Sterling was bought out by Phillips Petroleoum. There are several still in existence and running. They also had 2 of these in the PT boats. You can still get parts for them. They have now modified them to use electronic ignition, can be run on natural gas and use only 2 spark plugs to a cylinder. They can be tuned from 250 H.P. to over 1000 H.P. at 100% duty cycle. I recieved this info from a man that worked on them. This is still the largest gasoline engine I have seen. It is 3619 cubic inch. Rated at H.P. is at 1200 rpm.
