Default Windoze Vista...???

Does Anybody Have Vista and Like it...

Seems to Work OK but Don't seem to support Micro$oft Frontpage very well.... I can work on Webpage but Can't Publish it.... Just can't get logged into server.... I Tried to get a FTP program also and all that says is URL Not Supported.... Must be a Problem with Vista as Old Puter with XP Works Fine and I have the same Frontpage in Both...????

I've tried Turning off Nortons, Firewall ect. and No Difference...??? I'm thinking maybe Vista is another Windoze Melenuim.... Anybody have any Ideas..... I think they want you to buy their 300 $ Replacement for Frontpage... But it won't work for this guy... I will just go to XP as it would cost Less...

Many problems with non-Microsoft software have been reported, and more people are NOT upgrading until they see which way the thing goes.

We stayed with Windows 2000, didn't get into XP so avoided most of the SP2 problems.

If your old setup works OK, stick with it.

Ken,
About a year ago Dell sent me a new inspiron with the vista basic package as a warrenty replacement for an
XP Professional model I had, I refused it and they then sent a vista home premium system, I tried it for a week and sent it back, I am not a computor wizard by any means but I felt that the Vista systems I used were GARBAGE.
I did learn that at that time you could not use ANY H.P products with the Vista system.
After several more weeks of playing their little game they finnally gave in and sent me an XP system that was supposed to be the same as my old one but it isn't.
I kept it , at least it has a decent operating system, I do know I'll NEVER purchase another from this company.

Well... This was a HP Bundle from Wallyworld... Used my old 1200 HP Printer. Which seems to work OK... Only real Problem I have so far is that Frontpage thing.... Even if I have to buy XP will still be a Lot Cheaper than them Build your Own Puter Places.... I Sure do Like the Widescreen Monitor... Meanwhile I can still use old one to work with Frontpage if and When I ever get around to updating my website....

I just bought a new PC Sunday and it came with Vista Home Premium. I'm not super thrilled with it yet because of some software issues. But, I'm happy to have a fast processor that can finally take advantage of my high speed connection! If it keeps being finicky I may load XP just to eliminate the hassle.

When I read that you need to double your ram memory in order to use vista, I stayed with XP. It works fine for me.

Well... I got 2 Gigs of Ram so that shouldn't be a problem.... I searched some on the web about the Frontpage thing but didn't really get anywhere... Yet.... Going back to XP is always an Option.... I do notice this one Boots up a Lot Faster.... So thats a Plus...

It always amazes me after working in the computer field for almost 15 years now how MicroSucks keeps telling everyone how much better their next operating system is going to be, and as of yet I haven't seen an operating system they put out that can compare to the old DOS system, it was bullet proof even though it was a command prompt system,95 wasn't bad, then 98 it was better.in some ways, then M.E....man what a joke that was...then 2000 was ok, then XP, the end all operating system...lol
When most US based businesses won't even look at an operating system, it has to make one sit back and think, and thats what Vista did. 2 Gigs of memory and thats just basically to run the operating system, wouldn't you think after all these years of software writing MicroSucks would have an operating system that could run smoother and on less memory.?
They seem to keep adding more and more garbage so the computer no matter how fast, can't keep enough resources available to keep itself stable, then again maybe thats a hardware selling ploy.
If it weren't for driver issues, I would still be using 98 SE on my 3 systems here at home, XP Pro is ok, and what I use mostly, but it has its issues like most of MicroSucks operating system.
Linux is starting to look darn good....
Just my 2 cents.

We still use DOS, all of our machines are dual-boot with Win2kPro, incluing the laptops.

DOS was fine for single programmes, but Windows came along because folks (read Microsoft maybe) wanted multi-tasking operation.

We ran the Vista Beta versions before the main release, and really couldn't see anything there that we would want to upgrade for.

Our fastest machines are 1.7gHz, most are 1gHz or less, we just don't need all that speed and memory for what we use the 'puters for. The only machine that we are upgrading is the one we do the graphics and website work on, that will be a 2.4gHz soon with 1gb of ram. My everyday machine is 1gHz, the one at the office is a 733mHz, the two sons have 1.7gHz each, Rita has a 1.7gHz (She watches a lot of Natural History DVD's on it)

Bought Dad a new laptop, came with Vista. NOT IMPRESSED!!! Won't work with printer, had to get tech service from internet provider to install internet, SLOW BOOT UP and shut-down menu just plain sucks (dad wasn't too familiar with how to shut down 2000, and Vista hides the full shut down).

Just rebuilt a Dell Dimension 8100 for myself, installed a 250 Gig hard drive and purchased XP Pro. Boots in less than 1 min. Must be all of that extra crap they put on the computers you buy.

Retired my old IBM with Windows 98, and bought a new puter with Vista Office Premium. I like it, of course some things work differently and are in a different location, but as far as I'm concerned it's a BIG improvement I do dislike the dummy symbols instead of written IDs, kind of like the turtle and rabbit on a tractor throttle Also got a puter with XP PRO. Like it too Can't see a reason to run out and buy the latest OS though. Got them set up to share and synchronize certain files. So far XP and Vista are getting along just fine, had to download a update so old Word could read new Word. Ken I've never tried to publish a web page, would probably take the rest of my life. Thank you guys who do, as they are very informative and entertaining. I have published my share of club newsletters.

Well... If you mean in the Menu Bar on top you can set that so your favorites, Tools, Help, Edit are in text... I never got used to the Favorite symbols ect. when I got IE 7 and use the text ones all the time... Just Right Click on the Top and put a check in the menu bar box. At least that works for me...

I Do Like the tabbed Browsing in IE 7 as you can open as many as you want and jump back and forth is less than a second...

I just have Vista home Premium, I spose it's about the same without the office goodies...

I could tell you a Looong story on the problems with Frontpage but I'll make it Short... As I couldn't publish page I searched on the web and found a patch for the server extensions and downloaded it and it Killed Frontpage Dead... So I said No Problem and Uninstalled it and Frontpage... Tryed to Load Frontpage back in and Nothing except The message that my Product Code was invalid... And the solution was buying the new 300 Dollar program.... And Yes it did say Micro$oft on the patch.... Well that Ticked Me Off.... So Ended up in System Recovery and wiped out everything and started over.... I thought Might as well do it now before I got any more stuff in here... I didn't want problems with whatever they left down the Road...

I'm Just going to get a Cheep Pagebuilding Program because I don't need a 300 $ Program to do a 19 cent webpage...

Opera users have had that for four years now.... The latest version has Speed Dial where you have all your regular sites on screen as thumbnails, and they are updated regularly (you set the update time) so if you have BBC News, for example, you can see the changes as the day goes by.

If you're going to write you own HTML code, you can use Windoze Notebook, we've been using 40Tude for 8 years now and have been very pleased with it.

You'd better believe all that pre-loaded bloatware slows the machine down!
However, it's easy enough to get rid of and it helps keep prices a LITTLE lower too.
It IS a paradox the manufacturers pre-load a bunch of crap that slows the very machines they build.......

Well.... I thought I would add a little More Info on Windows Vista....

After Endless Problems trying to get Frontpage and FTP programs to work and even having a couple So Called Experts look at it with No Results I finally stumbled onto a forum that knew something....

Turns out Vista Home Premium comes with IIS (Internet Information Services) Turned Off By Default...

So I went into Programs, Turn features on or off, And turned on All the IIS Features.... And now it works Fine...

New Updates are coming every few days.... So Maybe this thing will work after all...

Hi Ken

We have a new Acer 17 inch wireless laptop with Vista Ultimate and it crashed all the time with Internet Explorer, so I loaded Firefox and what a difference. No more trouble. It imported all my favorites and addresses. The only thing I didn't find so far is a compatible Active X program. I have also started using a browser named Flock, no joke, it is not for everyone, has a lot of buttons, but I really like it. No trouble so far with Flock either. I never did like Internet Explorer, I used to use Netscape and never had trouble with it either, but it is no longer supported since AOL bought them. The original Netscape was a Mozilla product and so is Firefox, and Flock. In my opinion all way better than Internet Explorer.
