Seeing you are from Canada, it may have something to do with the language set up.

I know it doesn't do it if language is set to English. Go to Control Panel, then go to Regional & Language Options, then Advanced. There my computer is set for English.....Helen

PS This may not be the answer!

Keyboard codes are probably set for a European country code.

Down on the bottom right-hand side of all our machine screens is the keyboard button to change from 'English English' to 'English USA'. We can click that if we want to use any of the country-locale specific items for the USA.

To do it 'properly', go to Start/Settings/Control Panel (might be called something new in Vista) double-click on 'Keyboard', then change to your particular requirements.

I had a similar problem recently with "#" showing up as the English version of POUND (the "L" looking thing). After 2 days of calling everyone I could think of, it turned out to be the font I was using. My son had accidentally switched fonts and that was causing the problem.
Just something to check...good luck
Kevin

???????????????-Was told by the computer whiz girl in the office that if I pushed Fn, ctrl, shift at the same time it would flip it back over. Took her 3 hrs to figure it out when it happened to her. Thx to all who replied.
