Default Damming putty for Pouring Babbit

I just saw a five pound box of Babbitrite damming putty for pouring babbit bearings sell on ebay for $30.50 plus $9.60 shipping. Please be aware that this same five pound box of putty is available from McMaster Carr for $21.50 and about $4.00 shipping. Save your money to pay for gasoline to run your engines!!!

Daniel,
Thanks for the information I have also seen items sell on ebay for alot more than they could be purchased for from other sources. Hopefully your post will help others both new and veterans in the hobby avoid this same mistake.

Good price on the putty but did you see price on tin based babbitt? all most $30/pound!! Anyone know of a more reasonable price for a 10 pound quantity?

Alex damming putty is used to dam babbittpewters or any other alloys before pouring as well as many other applications. May be reused if kept clean, resistant to heat and cold.

It's called that because that's what you say when it springs a leak and the whole ladle of molten babbit runs out on the dirty floor. : You say LOTS of other things if it runs out on your shoes

With Tin running close to $10.00 a pound in five ton lots and climbing steadily the company who buys the material and alloys and casts the bars for sale is not exactly getting rich at $30.00. Lead based babbit works just as well in all but the most critical situations. I am fortunate to still have about 20 pounds of tin babbit that I salvaged along railroad sidings back when I was a kid over 50 years ago.

don't bother with babbitrite (we called it bearsh-- at lockheed) mix a few dry cow pies with molasses and try it. won't work, but makes the real stuff seem cheap.

This is something that I read about on the internet and it is really cheap and works. You'll probably never guess it but Playdough works great I have used it twice and have not had a leak yet.

According to Craig Prucha's website, he uses a mixture of asbestos and motor oil for damming putty. I guess it works nicely enough.

Their Mold-Pac is awesome. I know a ton of people who use it and have nothing but good things to say about it. Hope this helps!
