Anybody else have an interest in having a forum in SmokStack that would address Military Generators and Small Engines. I know I have a number of both small and large military generators as well as engines for other uses. It could include; generators, welders, engines, pumps, and many more items. Would be great for locating parts, manuals, advice, storys, pictures, etc. Food for thought. Don Smith

OK, the question has been asked and the poll is on.
This will be a sub-board the same as Kohler and Onan. Existing mil-set posts would be moved into the new board. |

Sounds like a good idea to me. Military stuff is usually considerably different than a civilian counterpart and having a dedicated board to keep the mil equipment all in one place would make finding it later that much easier.

I see by the poll that we have 16 for it and 4against. Not sure what the arguments against it would be unless it might be of no interest to those.
Any input on both sides would be welcome and enlightning. Thanks to all who take the time to voice their opinions. Where does it go from here?? Don |

The next step is to tell me what defines a Military Gen-Set. What are the key words and model numbers that I would search for here in the Stak posts on file?
As to military small engines, in the interest of not creating too many forums, I think those should remain on our small engine board. http://www.smokstak.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=27 And what do we do about the Military Gen-Sets that are made by Onan and are filed in the Onan board? |

I voted against, mainly as it adds to the 'shop window clutter', and most of these enquiries seem to be handled pretty well in the existing forum. It is also more work for Harry (who will naturally say: "That's not a problem....!" ) Let's see how it comes out, time will tell. Peter |

I agree with you Harry. The Onan and Kohler type of Gen-Sets should remain on their forums. This new forum would be mostly for those other brands and models that do not fit into other sub forums. Some I have I cannot identify the make of the engine. All I have to go on is the Military numbers. It is these that would fall into this forum. Just a suggestion though. Thanks again Don

(Or search threads I've posted in - probably posted in the majority of the military genset threads I've run across in the past few years...) Also, Onan made some military gensets. Although they say Onan, I'd suggest they belong in the military forum. The MEP-016, for example, was sometimes made by Onan. But, being a mil standard set, the commercial side of Onan doesn't have parts or manuals for them... In the past, I opposed splitting the forum into smaller sub-forums, and saw it the way Peter mentioned. Then you added the Diesel sub-forum, and I've noticed what seems to be a lot more posts on old Diesels. So, it seems like having a dedicated subforum may encourage more activity on the topic. |

Yes, It would be beneficial to many as the gov't unloads good equipment that their friends no longer support.

I would also like to see one started. Military units can be hard to find info on. I have some manuals on the smaller units. 1.5 to 30 KW. Be glad to help when I can.

Military Onan units are not supported by Onan. As a motor sargent with a signal unit. I tried to get parts for some of my Onan units. Since I worked for Onan I thought it would not be a problem. I was told that Onan turns over all control over to the military under contract. They have no prints for them and cannot sell parts.

I just checked and there are 22 MEP threads and 194 threads with a MILITARY key word in the Onan forum.
Moving these over to the military gen-set forum only takes a couple of key strokes, but it might be appropriate to take more care and move them one-by-one. Anyone have additional key words that would help to accurately identify these threads? |

I've got a couple of military generator sets that have one cylinder air cooled engines that could be Onan or some-such, but my bigger one has a four cylinder Crosley engine. With that, I really wouldn't have any place to go without a dedicated site.
