Saw an auction add for PH#8487 on April 25-26. Part of a large dealership closing. Engine looks to be about a 24-75 but I am not a PH expert. Has what looks like a factory cab with it.
Auction site is www.lyonauction.com. Go to Lapeer, MI listing. Had a large pdf slideshow file. Pics are pages 211-212. Maybe someone can figure out how to get the pics extracted as I cannot seem to Doug |

Hey Doug!
We saw the listing & pictures today. The engine looks pretty tough.....It won't be easy to haul. The cab & canopy will have to come off first! No one was sure how long it has set there either. I agree, while it is posted as a 19-65, I think it is a 24-75 due to the size of the low pressure cylinder & the barrel. It has the narrow drivers on it, though. Beth |

Iam Only 1/2 Hour Away From The Sale Sight. Ive Known That Engine For Years. The Dealership Bought It From An Old Thresherman Probably 15? Years Ago. He Has Since Died. It Has Just Sat In The Yard. It Is A Little Rough But Should Be Saved. I Was Told It Was A Showmans Engine With A Lot Of Original Nickel Plating Still On It. It Is A Rather Unusual Port Huron As Most Of Them Around Here Were 19 Longfellows. I Hope It Goes To A Good Home And Restored. D. Babcock.

Thanks Shelby,
No it is not a "showman's" engine. The cab was for winter protection. I don't know about the nickel plating? Beth |

Is that cab what is left of an original? Are there many left of the Ports with the original cabs?

Travis!
Might you be looking to add a fine PORT HURON to your collection???? ![]() I don't know of very many Port Hurons that have retained the original cab. Dick Neeley's 19 still had it. Here are 2 items from my 1911 Port Huron catalog. The first describes the "loco cab" as durable in construction, attractive in appearance and a protection for the engineer as well as the engine. It is made of corrugated steel bolted to a woden frame; roof is glavanized and sides are nicely painted. The loco cab can be had with the combination canopy (as 8487 did/does). The combination came with side curtains which could be let down at night or during a storm. The combination protected the engine "as though in a shed." The second is a picture of the 1911 engine with the cab. Yes Gary, they had fenders and windows. Beth |

Fred Nolan had a 16hp with the factory cab....and it even came with two spare front wheels in case of a flat.

Don't reckon that enclosed cab would be hot down South in the Summertime, do you?
![]() They are way cool looking, though! Hey, for someone with a "fine wine taste with a beer budget", think a Port with a locomotive style cab could substitute for a 110 Case? ![]() Mike |

Mike,
That is why many refer to them as "cook shacks"....you cook in them! No "fine wine..." the Port is a step ahead of the 110 even without the cab! ![]() Beth

G was kind enough to post a picture of the 19 Port Huron at Bob Oliver's. Prior to disassembly, it had the full canopy & "cook shack." From the looks of the wheels, it has had a tough life.

Bump,
Last call.....I think it sells Saturday as the construction equipment sells Friday, 25 April & farm equipment Saturday 26 April. Sure hope it finds a good home like the 19 that just received a new home. One of my client is a scrapper & said he may go just to see....if he buys it, he knows I won't allow him to tear it apart! ![]() Beth |

The engine sold for $7000 to an unknown buyer.
Several of us commented that we'd make sure a scrapper did not buy it. They were there in full force as there was a lot of "scrap crap" everywhere. They had single gangs from plows laying throughout the lines and were selling them as "one bottom plows." The engine & boiler are worse then I thought. The firebox is rippled between every staybolt - all of which have been welded. The bottom left cleanout hole by the hitch has actual rust holes in the boiler. A square patch has been welded just in front of the throat sheet. The smokebox is rusted through both by the pedestal & just behind the door. The smokebox door handle is missing. The smokestack has a huge chunk out of the base & is cracked on the other side...the chunk was in the smokebox The platform brackets are rusted through. The firebox door is missing. The pedestal appeared to have been frozen and is broken. The wheels & much of the gearing looked good, but the drivers are stuck as you could tell they moved the engine through the mud & only the fronts had mud balls in them The levers & engine are froze. A chunk is broken out of the oil base on the left main bearing cap. I wish the buyer the best of luck as I heard him commenting on how it was worth about $12,000 as he was bidding for a couple of guys & that it wouldn't take much to fix it After he cast the winning bid, I heard him say now he has to figure out how to haul it.....yep, good luck. It will be a chore to remove it with the drivers stuck, questionable steering capabilities, broken front pedestal, broken rear hitch, cab & stack have to come off........![]() The best part to the engine: It was all there with the exception of the firebox door. As soon as my camera & computer agree, I'll post some pictures. Beth |
