Question Heat treating tools

I have a few wood working chisels that need to be straigntened and rehardened. I'm pretty expierenced in basic steel heat treatment so I know the hardening /tempering procedures. Question I have is, lacking a controled atmosphere funace or ss tool wrap, how is the best way to protect the fine cutting edge of these tools from burning / de-carb. I have heard of coating with borax, sort of like fluxing I guess. Any other thoughts?
Appreciate any suggestions, Thanks
Joe B

Joe, Depending on what you are trying to correct you may not loose the temper in your cutting edge. Are we talking about a tool shank to straighten or the cutting edge? I have quinched the cutting edge during the heat and not lost the temper while I got the shank straight. If you are reworking the cutting edge you have no choice but to retemper the edge after you make the final shape you are wanting. If tool steel, polish the body adjacent to the edge and draw the temper out to the edge and quinch. Case harden the edge if milder steel. Good Luck, Andy
