I'm trying to install a starter on a 3kw genset. It says the model # is SF3.0MP. I admit I am new to this vintage generator stuff. I can't seem to get it to turn over. Will I have to have two batteries to generate 24 volts DC. to make it work. I know one battery does'nt do it. The starter came with a two holed jack of sorts to plug power into the starter. I'm not sure what plugs into it.
Thanks for any help.

yep, if the starter you are trying to put on is an original military starter kit for that unit, then it needs 24 volts to crank--the electric start kit for those little 3kw MEPS was a nice addition.
The two-hole jack is an old DC military standard--28 volt power supply plug. Used to have cables made up so you just jumped between your M-Series vehicles identical plug, or rigged up a set of batteries to one. They got away from that old two-hole plug, and now use a circular, single pin bayonet style plug; we always called it the NATO-standard plug (supposed to be truly universal.) eric |

A good starter guy should be able to wind it to work at 12 volts, or you can almost certainly use 2 small lawn tractor or motorcycle batteries. Can't imagine it needs a LOT of current at 24 volts to start...

Does anyone have a source for that 2-pin connector? My Homelite has three kinds of connectors, one is the 2-pin style right next to the two wing-nut terminals. I'd like a connector.
I'd also like to find a source for the 3-pin 115V connectors. -Tad |

I think two small 12V batteries in series (like flashlight batteries (+) to (-)) would be your best bet. Keeps your gen set in original condition, you never know, someone may pay top $ for it one day.

In the past I have used CPVC parts cut down on a lathe if sch 50 is too large. If I can't find sources for OEM parts. I make my own. PVC pipe and end cap with holes drilled, with brass bolts of proper size in place with backup nuts and spaced to fit. The bolts can be cut or split on band saw, and beveled to make a good connection. If slotted with "keyway" make changes where needed. After test for tight fit, braze wires, heat shrink where needed and fill the pipe with quick set epoxy. Or. If clearance is a problem at the PVC end cap, smaller bolts could be used with 2-3 nuts (lok-tite) jammed on the ends, and file down to fit the female connection. Paint to match. 2 stroke huh? |

Good idea, I'll take a look at some pipe.
Yea, 2-stroke. No need to check the oil if it's in with the fuel. Too bad it didn't just run on avgas and hope I'm still working on freeing up the fuel shut-off. It is stuck (in the open position). Currently it's soaking in Kroil. -Tad |
