Talking It's Twins !!!

Just kidding but.................

I did bring home a couple gensets from an estate sale this evening. I had to have them no matter what my lovely wife said (or didn't say).

Now I need help

These guys are from the Vietnam era and are small skid-mounted units. They are direct coupled and powered by two cylinder (16 cu. in.) Chrysler engines. The output is rated at 1.5 KW @ 60 Hz. They are mounted in an aluminum frame and look just great. I have pictures of the two seated in the bed of my pickup and now they're in my shop ready for a cleanup and I hope minor work before I explain to my wife how much they're actually worth.

Are these familiar items to you guys? Can I get manuals and as importantly can I get parts?

They are very well built and I am happy to have them. VERY happy !!!

Thanks in advance,

Bruce

nice find! I have one unit that is older than yours as the engine mounts differently to the frame and has an oil bath air cleaner.

I know you can get parts from www.SaturnSurplus.com

oh, and I got the manuals off a fellow staker, if you would like me to forward them to you just let me known your email address.

Just check the voltage on those gen sets. There are a lot of 24VDC and 120V 400Hz. units out there that look like the 120V 60Hz. units you want for home use.

You find those gensets in 24VDC for use with radios. Lots of tracked military vehicles had them as auxiliary power. The 400Hz 120/208 3Ph units ran radar stuff. You can use them for lights, but electric motors tend to turn up to warp speed and disintegrate at 400Hz. I have seen lots of them with the 2 cylinder flat opposed engines sell for around 150 bucks in the 24VDC configuration. The 400Hz. units bring marginally more. The 120 volt 60Hz. units are the sought after ones, as you can use them for camping, etc.
There are usually a few for sale on the SteelSoldiers site. www.steelsoldiers.com
They are a bunch of good guys too, just like Big Green Iron!

The engines are a MILITARY STANDARD ENGINE. Chrysler just happen to have the contract under which the units you have were built. You will see MANY other manufactures names on the same engines. I have the Flat 4 version of this engine on a 3 KW generator which I am working on for the Fire Department. It was made by Wisconsin as a sub-contractor for Continental.
A friend of mine has one of these engines on a gasoline fuel forced air heater which is of course a piece of military equipment.

Again.....you guys are right on the money and I thank you.

Saturday I went out in the shop and got one of my twins up on the bench (the one with more compression) and started tinkering. After figuring out this and that I started to dig in and I'm having issues with the ignition. I've cleaned up the carburator and gotten the armored spark plugs out. The spark that I have is real mild and yellow. What I'd like to do is go through the ignition like I did the carb. Set the timing, points etc........

I see on the points cover that the gap there belongs at 0.018", but as far as timing goes I'm at a loss.

The correct manual number from the nameplate on the motor appears to be TM 5-2805-257-14 & 24P (I think) I've found the other manuals that you guys led me to, but this one is specific to the Chrysler engine that is coupled to the genset. I looked on steelsoldiers.com but I didn't see it there. Thanks much for any info at all

Thanks, Bruce

The engine on the 3 KW generator I have is electronic ignition. The box where the points should be is empty.
