Default Paint for steam toy.

I have an older steam toy I want to de-rust and paint. What kind of paint works best. The boiler is fired with dry fuel but am considering switching to LP. Will BBQ grill paint work? The boiler is SS so I will painting the shield around the boiler and the base.

If you're just worried about appearance then either bbq or header paint will work. If you're concerned about resale value, then leaving it alone might be a better option.

Generally, a "repaint" (as opposed to a "proper restoration") will bring less than an unmolested, rusty original.
