This is a picture of a picture and the best I can do but the head and the rocker stand are so unusual that I just had to post it. What the heck kind of engine is this anyway???

Looks kind of like a a Gray with out the raised letters. My two cents worth.

There is a possibility that it is a Gilson. All of them I have seen have had the push rod on what is ususlly considered the mag side of an engine. Joe Morris

I am going to bump this back up to the top once because the two things I am very shure of are that this is not a Gray or Gilson like any I have ever seen and I shure would like to know what make it really is.

As my first post says this is a picture scanned from a picture which was not real clear to begin with. That is the best I can do at this time. The two unusual features of the engine are the radiating cooling fins on the head and the forked rocker arm bracket connected to two of the head bolts. It also has a round connecting rod and is about 4 HP in size.

O K You asked for more pix. Here they are. I am 90% shure I know what this engine is now but I will leave it like this for a few days. Notice the crude castings with all the warts and lumps. The foundry sand looks like it was fine gravel! The last picture is three 1 1/2 HP John Deere engines that were in an auction today. The first and third brought $900.00 and the second $750.00. Four engines back from them is a 4 HP Fuller & Johnson on an original Galloway type cart which also went for $900.00. Which one would you rather have? I'll take the F & J.

Hi Gang;
Been away for a couple of weeks due to a fried computor. (tastes like Haggis) The finned head looks a little like an Oshkosh two cycle but I don't think that is what it is. I purchased it at an auction in Dorchester, WI which is not too far from Marshfield and at first I thought it might be a Lang and Sharmann but after seeing a picture of one I know that is not what it is. Midget City was my next guess but one was at "Boo a few years ago and this "aint one". What I now think it is is a Fleischmann. I have heard this story from two different places so their might be some truth to it. "There were two brothers named Fleischmann who were farmers and lived near Marshfield. To fill in in the winter months when they were not buisy the designed an engine. They made casting patterns and had castings made by Lang and Scharmann. They machined and assembled a couple of these engines every winter for a few years and sold them locally. The engines never had any part numbers, serial or name tags and were never advertised except by word of mouth.The total number built was probably between 8 and 12." The early Lang and Scharmann castings were notoriously rough and that also fits this engine. I also think that this engine had no original paint on it up until a few years ago when it was painted green. I may never know for shure just exactly what I have but until I have more information this is my best guess. Iron Wolf
