Smile PE-75/U generator find

Picked up this nice PE-75/U generator yesterday...pretty much complete except for the belt guard....uses a 6 hp Briggs ZZ engine to drive the generator head....2.5 kw, 120 V / 60 hz. Weighs around 300 lbs.

Even had some spare parts and tools in the toolbox, and the original shipping date card of 1954....the carb needs some work but otherwise a good find, I think.

Yes, that's a great find! ...I have one and they are very nice...mine is from 1943 and also has the 4 long wood dowels that store clipped on the frame and are to be inserted into the holes in the base so 4 guys can carry it.

If yours is from 1954 it must be one of the last with the ZZ engine on it (or a reworked one) ...the later variants of this set used a different engine.

Well, the serial number on the ZZ engine indicates the engine was manufactured in 1944...but there was some documentation with it that indicated a 1954 ship date on the PE-75/U unit. Not sure what that would mean. I'll have to re-examine that documentation again when I get home tonite.

I traided for a PE-75T reciently and have the Briggs ZZ engine running great. Un-warping the two piece flow jet carb was sporty ,but it came out good. I don't have any power coming out of mine and the windings may have been hot at one time. I did free up the brushes before running it. I think mine is 1941 , but the engine tag is missing. I really need the Leland generator manual, but have not been able to find one. The unit tag has bad spots on it but says it was made by Clinton Engine Company.

What spark plugs do you guys have in yours?

If you need a 18 MM Sheided plug, The Champion type number is an XMD-15. I do not know what the stock number is.

Ed,

The throttle body mating surface on my carb is warped a bit, enough to be a problem. How did you fix yours ??

Do you know where I could find a rebuild kit for the large 2-piece flo-jet carb? Although rebuild won't help much if the mating surfaces are warped in one area.

You can still get the rebuild part from a B&S dealer as they used that carb for MANY years on Many engine models.

I thought it would be a common part as well ( that is, the carb rebuild kit ), but I have been unable to find it on-line except for one place, "Parts from the Past". I was just trying to shop around for prices. The part # for the Large 2-piece flo-jet overhaul kit is #291692. Not sure why it would be so hard to find. I might try using permatex gasket sealer on the bowl to try to seal up the slight warpage on the throttle-body piece. If that doesn't work, might have to find a new carb.

I would almost bet that the B&S dealer I use has on on the shelf. He has a VERY good parts inventory. An example is a fuel tank for a 5 HP B&S engine. They are still on Nation wide back order but a couple on months ago Dad need on. Precision Small Engine had one on the shelf.
If you would like their Phone number PM me and I will provide. This is in Southwest Missouri so it is not that far and the package would not wieght that much so the shipping would not be a killer.
That carb kit may have had a part number change as I am pretty sure the same kit is used on later 7 HP (170000 series) and 8 HP (190000 series ) B&S engines.

On the warped carb casting, I removed the gasket and reassembled it finger tight with a flat washer on each screw between the castings. Then I put it in a big vice and squezzed it in the direction opposit the warp. I still had to use two gaskets, P/N . I have some pictures, but can't figure out how to post them.
