While cleaning out the contents of an 100 year old warehouse I came across this hardie...what a monster. I collect all blacksmithing tools plus other blacksmith items and I've never seen a hardie this large. Perhaps I've not been around enough in my 50 years of collecting but have any of you guys ever seen one this large? It weighs in at 36 lbs and the smallest portion of the insert is exactly 2". Comments welcomed!!

Looks like a tinners stake, the 2" sq would fit one of the holes in a tinners bench plate. Steve

I think you may be right as it has quite a sharp taper and not be conducive to the typical anvil which require a non-taper but rather a constant dimension...thanks for your imput.

Hello,
This is not a hardie but a complete anvil. They were fixed into a big wooden block and quite common in the past for the lighter work. Marc. |

I guess in that case a "stake anvil" would be a more appropriate term for this item..right?
