Default 6 volt fuel pump

The 1930 Packard needs a 6 volt positive electric fuel pump to replace the old one. Some say the 6 volt pumps on store shelves now can't handle ethanol. Also what should the fuel pressure in PSI for this updraft system?

Is there a better made pump? Thanks.

John:

I would have thought the Packard had a Stewart vacuum fuel system on it. I learn somethin' ever' day.

If there's anything left of the old pump, I think if it were mine, I'd rebuild it.

I was given a new 6 volt electric fuel pump by a friend. This thing looks a lot like the old Autopulse pumps.

He said it didn't work and when I took it apart, it was very similar to the Autopulse except that, instead of the brass bellows it had a rubber bellows that had turned to chewing gum from the gasoline.

When I restored a Delco light plant, I used an old Autopulse that was given to me in the 1950's and it was off of a dirt track race car. It had the metal bellows in it and, after cleaning, worked like a champ.

That's what I think you ought to look for.

Take care - Elden

Here's the kind I got for my 1931 Reo truck. Works really good!

If you look in Hemmings Motor News, their is people that advertise rebuilding old fuel pumps. That is what I would do if you don't no how to rebuild it yourself. Thanks, Joe A.

Thanks for the tips. Of course this car did have a vacuum pump originally but for an occasionally driven car this has been more reliable.

The Autopulse and e-Bay tips are being followed up.

Default More 6 volt fuel pump

Took the accessory fuel pump off the Packard and it has no brand name but does have a pressure regulator attached. No indication what the pressure is.

Cleaned the two points in the pump and it seems to run great. Shall I rely on it?

The pictures are pretty clear. The model number is 6V-E11M. Thanks.

John:

Danged if I can remember perzackly but I think that's possibly a later model of the Autopulse I had.

If it's an Autopulse, it will kinda hum or click until you shut off the outlet, then it will stop and only click when the system needs more fuel to maintain pressure.

The only thing I'd check is to make sure it has a metal bellows. The rubber one is liable to turn into chewing gum.

Take care - Elden
