Exclamation Re: champion outboard motor year?HP?

I had a 3 HP Champoin, had the horse collar tank - 1954. Ran well, but had above water exhaust - noisy as all get out! exhaust pipe was about 11/4"brass tube, curved away from the engine at just above the waterline and flattened at the end

I have seen a few Champions of the late 40's at engine shows & they were rated 4.2 hp (single cylinder). I have never seen a 2 cylinder, but they may have made them. Google the Antique outboard motor club (AOMC), those guys are really helpful and someone may have a list serial numbers so you can date your engine & get some specs. Also, the club has lots of pics from meets & other events - you might be able to match yours to an existing picture (this really helps to determine what pieces you are missing). Good luck & have fun with it. 40s & 50s vintage outboards are easy to work on & parts are reasonable easy to get.

Cheers,

Thierry

This is probably a 1940 4.2 horsepower. You can find this kind of info at .com.

"The Old Outboard Book" shows the Champion S1F as a 1940 model 3.2 HP made by Scott-Atwater.

All pre war Champions were built by Scott Atwater before they built the "Scott Atwater" brand post war. The S1F with the " horse collar " thank is a very collectable outboard. I have one and a 1937 S1C also.
