Default Onan DJB question

Hello all, I have acquired a DJB genset with no data plate. I started it and it ran well with 45 psi oil pressure and was putting out 120/240 volts and 59-61 hz. It had not run in a few years so I let it run with a portable electric heater for a load. After about 5 mins of running it began to clatter loudly and I shut it off, thinking it was a thrown rod. Further analysis pinned down the fuel shut off relay making all of the racket. I bought the service and operator's manuals and checked out the control box and narrowed down the offending component: the k-11 relay start solenoid. I tried a generic automotive relay and had no voltage at the "s" terminal, so I think I need an internally grounded relay. Can anyone tell me what part number NAPA or Advance Auto parts product would work for the k-11 relay? Thanks, John

Talking Re: Onan DJB question

The only time the Start Solenoid (K11) is activated is during Starting, and
shouldn't be active during the Running Phase, ever. I would look at the
rest of the Engine Control System for your problem, rather than the Start
Solenoid, for the cause of your problem. K11 can't be active unless the
Start Switch is stuck in the Start Mode, AND the Run Relay (K12) is in
the Stop Mode. (K12 Normally Closed contacts, closed) Since the Start Switch
(S11) is a Momentary SPDT Spring loaded, that should keep it in the Center
Off Position unless it is manually activate, OR you have something connected
to the Rmote Start Terminal Contacts that provides a Ground to the Start
Solenoid (K11) thru the NC Contacts of the Run Relay (K12) in Stop Mode.
If the Run Relay is in Run Mode those NC Conacts should be Open, which
isolates the Start Solenoid (S11) from Ground even if the Start Switch,
or something connected Remote Start Terminal contacts is providing a Ground.

Thanks for the quick answers, on the road now and can't take a pic. The relay looks like a 1970 Mustang starter solenoid relay with large lugs for BATT and STARTER and small lugs for ignition and start switch. The troubleshooting procedure in the manual shows that I should have 12 VDC at the start switch lug, that is what the start/stop switch provides a ground to in the "start" position to energize the starter solenoid. I don't have any voltage at that point, so I suspect the relay is bad.
I'll look over the posts that you all so kindly provided when I get home and try to figure out the problem. Thanks again for the quick responses to my problem, this forum is a gem! I'll let you all know what I find.

Oh man, I just read my posts and realize that I neglected to mention that the starter switch no longer energizes the starter. My bad, I apologize. The problem that I have is that there is no voltage at the start/stop switch and the schematic shows the "relay, starter solenoid" as the sourceof 12 VDC for the start switch. That is why I suspect the relay, which is K-11 on the schematic. After reading your replies I suspect that I have other problems as well because of the fuel solenoid actuating repeatedly while the engine is running. I broke down and ordered the relay from an Onan dealer, $38.00. I'll put it on when it comes in and report my results.
Thanks again for all of the help. I hope I can return the favor some day.
