I had several, and resold them...back when they were $45-60. (All else is mark-up since Ertl created a "collectability" by limiting production) I was told there was SUPPOSED to be a series of models, except it ended abruptly after the Froelich tractor model proved to be pretty much a white elephant. (At one point many dealers were actually trying to dump THOSE at $15-20! -- I SHOULD have bought a few of those at that price, either as "investments" or to swipe the wheels and gears for other projects, but I didn't think all that much of it either)
For a toy steam engine, it's GREAT, just about the BEST available, and pretty impressive to look at. For a "scale model", tho, there are a fair number of inaccuracies and oddities if you look close enough (some because many of the details were taken from ONE engine in preservation, rather than Case specs and blueprints)...just count the number of flyballs on the governor for a start, lol. I wouldn't spend that much on one, though. If you shop around they can still be found in the $100 range. |

I saw one sell at a local auction one night for close to $200.00 along with a couple other of the precision series tractors, that sold for over $150.00.I bought mine at at another local auction about a year later for $50.00.

I have one and I would not even consider way more than a toy. Its wonderfully detailed, metal construction. forget the price! Its worth the tarrif. I prefer one class act like this than a cabinet full of toys. My regret is IRTL cannot follow with a different steamer, in the same scale and quality, every year or three. I bet they lost money on this and never made another big steamer again.
BTW, I love a bargain too and searched out a fair deal on mine. All I mean to say is this is one class act. |

I've got one, I've had it for a while. I got mine from action farm toys, it has incredible detail.

I'm guessing too that they lost money on this one.... The local Farm & Fleet store was selling them for just a few dollars more than the John Deere , Farmall , and other tractor toys were going for at the time.
Just wish I had gotten more than the one I did. Went back for more when I got my next paycheck, but they were sold out and never got more in. Sure there were some minor inacurracies, kind of like when they put four tube headers on flathead Fords that only had 3 ports per side, but it still made for a nice looking toy/model. |
