Default Maytag Twin RPM

What is the spec for the Maytag Twin I picked up one that runs well at 3000 Rpms I have two others that run around 1600. I do think 3000 is too much unless you were in a hurry to get the laundry done. LOL

Hi Randy,

The Maytag Twins have no govenor, the amount of air you allow in at the air knob controlls the speed of the engine.

If you have one that is running much to fast and does not respond to the air valve, it meean there is an air leak somewhere around the crank case.

On top of the engine crankcase is a plug that you can remove to get to the governor adjust screw. The governor valve may be stuck unless someone messed with it.

Ted, there is a governor on these engines. The knob which you are referring to only adjusts the fuel/air mixture. Lean it out too much, and you will overheat the engine, and run the risk of seizing it. Run it too far the other way, and you will run the engine too rich, and foul out the plugs.

A manual will have pictures, and explain it better than I can, but you start by looking for a square plug on top of the crankcase. Screw this out, and rotate the crankshaft, until you see a screwhead. Running this in and out adjusts the governor. Please refer to a manual to get it all correct. I'm going by memory here.

Take Care.

Well I must have something stuck I have been turning the gov adjust screw in but I have no change. Guess I will have to take it apart and do a little exploratory surgury. LOL I cant complain I got it for free and Its got the wico ignition and I didnt have a twin with the wico.

The Maytag twin should be set to run at a maximun of 1600 rpm, as per Maytag rebuild/repair manual. This is acheived by adjusting the governor found under the pipe plug on top of the crankcase. Using a screwdriver turn the slotted screw containing the cotter pin "end" clockwise to increse speed, cc to reduce speed. If the governor is stuck in the crankshaft, you will just unwind the light spring, and not move the governor.
