Default Fuel Shutoff Leaking at Tank

Just noticed a leak on my Generac 5000W generator where the fuel shutoff is connected to the bottom of the tank. The fitting is obviously loose and it looks like it needs to be tightened but I don't see any threads or other tightening mechanism. The shutoff is a screw in style unit. Am I blind or just stupid? Does anyone know how it attaches to the tank. Thanks for any help.

If this is a plastic tank, many use a rubber grommet that is pushed into the tank and then the shut-off valve is pushed in the grommet Sten,s has them and you might find one the would work at a Snapper dealer.

If you have a metal tank you could try disconnecting the fuel line and turning the shutoff into the tank until it comes tight. Worked for me!

It's a plastic tank and appears to be a press fit grommet. I'm not impressed with the design and need to come up with a reasonably priced fix.

Can you tell exactly where it is leaking?

When power failed during a 2004 hurricane, I found that mine had a relatively slow leak around the valve lever. A temporary rag was tied around it, and the gas evaporated without dripping.

After the storm, a new grommet and valve were purchased. It was quite hard to remove the old ones, and then the new valve was difficult to press into the new grommet. If I were to do it again, I'd probably use some kind of lubrication.

If yours is loose, be sure it is pushed all the way in. As I recall, the valve has a shoulder that should be seated against the grommet.

I ordered a new grommet today. I'll give that a shot before any major surgery.

Yanked out the old grommet and shutoff, cut grommet off shutoff, put in new grommet, lubed up shutoff and pushed it in. Good as new. Thanks all.
