Default Electric Engine?

Just picked this up and after a little adjusting of the contacts, straightening of the bearing pins and a drop of oil, it runs very well. Reversable with variable speed if you move the lever just right.
Picture below and video of it running through this link:

Nice find. 6 volts is possibly too much. I have seen one run at a tractor show on two C or D cells. Get a battery holder from Radio Shack. My train club quarterly has an update on these. Mesco shown in a catalog copyrighted in 1905. Places them in New York and Chicago. With factories in Jersey City, New Jersey.
1011 length 7 in. 1012=5 3/4 in. 1013=4 inches. Special thanks to my club member Doug Cotts. Trains shown pictured could be 1910-1912. Manhattan Electrical Supply or Mesco.
Regards, Bob

You are right - I tried it with 2 D cells and it runs real nice. Much slower than with 6V. I think I have a 4-D holder that I will rewire as series / parallel to give 3V with more amps (2 stacks of 3V).

Hi, I see that you list St. Louis. I was born in Brentwood. We have family around Effingham, IL. We went once to the show at Oblong, IL. where we stayed with her folks. Anything good close to your area? We used to go to the rail road transportation museum. Also there was a small or miniature R.R. close to Lambert Field. My dad said it was run by a group of doctors and the rides were free. Not sure if still there? I do have show guides and lots of listings on line now.
Thanks, Bob

Nice little electric engine, John! That pot metal flywheel is starting to look a little scary, though.

Here's a video of one I have.

When I first got my little electric engine I thought it was a cute little toy. Then Junkologist has to show up with his 'Fancy Dan' of a machine and I felt mine was a little 'lacking'. So I set about in my shop and put my "Maximum-Engineering" cap on to see if I could update the design and come up with a new, better, improved, 21st century version of the machine.
With the pictures below, I present:
The Maximum Electric Engine.

OK - Here it is.
I still need to work out some issues with the contacts & timing, but it is close enough to run on its own. You will note that I have to 'adjust' the contacts to get it going. I still need to make some thin strips to contact the timing cams and right now I am just using the end of the wire. It tends to flatten out instead of springing back.

John,

Nice work!

Here is a link to some of the solenoid motors I have built. The tractor is nearly done now and I will be doing a video for that soon, hopefully. The tractor took 7 years to build and uses two 5vdc pinball solenoids. The other motors, some of which are hit and miss, have been big hits at the shows I attend.

There is a couple of videos of Jerry Kieffer's 1936 JD D. I posted videos of my D to compare with Jerry's 1/8 scale version. The 1/8 scale D can sit right in the bore of the real tractor. Very cool!

Enjoy!
