Default HELP! I need a Briggs crankshaft

I am almost finished with the restoration of a briggs NP but I have run into a big problem. I need a new crankshaft, the one I have is scored real bad on the connecting rod journal. The connecting rod is also in bad shape but they can be found on ebay. The piston is not in the best shape but it is still useable.

The N-NP-NR-NS-U-6-6H-6S are the same engines and cranks and rods are interchangeble. The differences are which type of starter you have, and what the PTO is doing.

Checking my IPL for the model N, I found the crankshaft for your type no. listed as p/n 26886. This crank was used on 19 other type nos. for the N and 23 type nos. for the model 6. Additionally, p/n 26782, used in the model 8, will interchange with your crank. The problem will be finding one since both of these have been discontinued for years, and the chance of finding a parts engine with a crank in better shape than yours will be difficult. Another alternative might be to have your crank carefully checked to see if your crankpin can be turned down .020 undersize. Briggs made a rod for this kind of repair, p/n 292510. These do show up now and again on eBay.

There is not a machine shop in town that can weld and grind a crankshaft. The closest shop is 40-50 miles away.

Default Briggs crankshaft

When I was a machinist apprentice I had a 6B crank turned down, plated up with nickel and ground to standard size, at the large establishment where I worked.
Perhaps you could find a place that could do this service. Does it really matter if the shop is 40 or more miles away? Couldn't you just mail the crank, after talking to the shop on the phone to insure you are comfortable with it?

Mike I bought a bunch of Briggs and Maytag parts and engines form a guy a while back. I think there are a couple of loose cranks in the boxes. It is down at the farm and I would have to get there to look. If you don't find one you would be welcome to one if there is one. Pay the postage and I will send it.

@Beanscoot
I could drive the 50 miles to the machine shop that is not a problem I would have prefered to have the work done it town but that is not going to happen.

@Dan Baalman
Thank you for the offer. Let me know if you need pictures of the crankshaft I have.

Things have changed somewhat, now I need the ball bearing that is on the PTO side of the crankshaft on the NP. I am not sure if the old one could be re used or not. Are they still Availble?

Default Ball Bearing

Although I'm not familiar with that particular bearing, there's a good chance it is a standard bearing. Measure it up with vernier calipers (OD, ID and thickness). A lot of bearings, even old ones, are metric sizes so check for both standard and metric dimensions.

I would first clean the old bearing thoroughly in solvent though and see if it's usable. It doesn't have to be perfect for an engine that won't see a lot of hours. It just can't be really sloppy.

Briggs still lists that bearing. Part no. 99158. Lists for $9.95.

Is the rear seal still availble? There is a number on the old seal #50212.
