Might be one of the rare invisible OTTAWA's. Seriously the picture didn't show up. Try again and I bet we can identify it for you. OTTAWA DAN

after a little bit of snoofing around im going to have to say yes you have an air cooled ottawa, i thought gade at first but they didnt have an ignitor on the side of the cylinder. these engines were quite an operation. it is air cooled, but not as it would look. the reason behind the exhaust pipe, and the muffler lower on the cylinder is that when the engine was latched out (missing) the air being drawn past the cylinder through the lower port cooled the cylinder. a fellow that shows with us at Argyle has several gades that are built almost the same, including a small model he built himself that runs exceptionally well. theyre a sight to behold when running and have a very interesting sound.

Looks almost like a Gade or associated to me as well, but all of those air cooled engines look close to the same. You dont see many of the air cooled ottowas around. Anyway, Great find hope you post a video of the Ottowa running!

Thanks everyone for your input. I think it is an Ottowa because in the BYB on page 365 is a picture of one that looks real close. I got this engine from a very Dear friend who is gone now. It has wrist pin noise I want to fix and I want to do a better job on the gas line, and I want to make a battery box for it.
I think there is a watercooled version of this engine. I would like to hear from anyone that may have or know of one. Thanks to everyone. M&WJoe

Thanks John, You have a nice engine there
. My engine may be a size smaller than yours. I`ll get the demensions and post them. The best way to tell is from the side view. The distance from cylinder to flywheel is shorter on my engine. Yours looks more like the one in the BYB. What do you think? I would like to place a Hp size on mine. Thanks M&WJoe

John, am I correct in thinking that your Ottawa air cooled is either a 1 3/4 or 2HP?
Joe, your Ottawa looks like a 1 1/2HP, is that correct? Also what is the serial number, please! Helen |

Howdy Joe it's definitly an air cooled Ottawa they were made in two models the 1 1/2 and the 2hp they were priced at $24.75. The engine looks very similar to the associated engines from waterloo Iowa. Great loooking engine great find.

shaft. It looks to be 4623. The engine must be a 2-hp. It has a 4" piston with a 5- 1/2 in. stroke. If you remember, you and George helped me in determining that it is an Ottawa.

Thanks John! I just didn't have the serial number recorded in my list. But I found it in an email. It is probably A623. Helen
Sometime when it warms up, would you please check the bore again. I thought it was less than 4". |

Helen, I checked my measurement this AM when I had more light, and you are right. the piston is 3 -7/8" with a 5" stroke and it does look like the serial is A623. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you and George, and to all the people on Smokstak and Harry and Jeannie. John

Thanks a bunch John! According to the stats that we have seen that would be 1 3/4HP like our Ottawa and Union Giant. Glad we got that resolved!
Merry Christmas to you and your family! Merry Christmas to the entire Ottawa Family and the whole world!! Tis the season...... Helen & George |

Joe, thanks for the serial number! Book specs list bore as
3 5/8" and stroke as 3 7/8". Flywheels are 16 in on the 1 1/2. Book specs are not always true to what was produced!!!! We would like to see additional close-up pictures of this engine if you are willing. That would be in exchange for some 1 1/2 HP water cooled pics(joke). You have probably already seen them! You can PM us thru SmokStak if you want to........Helen |
