Default Onan 27k with a Kubota

Hi.

I just recently acquired a 27 and a 21 kw Onan gen set 01 vintage with Kubota engines.

One; the 21 kw with a 4 cylinder Kubota I believe ingested salt water and is seized. In need of a re-build?

The other a 27 kw 5 cylinder also seized.
Engine model# f2803, Sr# xe4608, Code# 1g629-4200

Both have clean oil. NO WATER.

I won't to keep the 27 kw. Was wondering what I should do/ look for. If needed what kinds of thing will I need for a re-build. Bering, piston, rings, sleeves/pistons? And how much should I look to spend.

Thanks
Rich

Clean oil does't usually fit with water ingestion.

Have you drained the oil? Sometimes there is water below the level of the dipstick. Also might find bearing or piston material (silver flakes/powder) in the bottom of the pan.

Any signs of water damage to the rest of the generator set? Rust etc? Any water in air filter cannisters, intake manifold etc?

Sudden water ingestion will likely have caused significant damage to the engine and perhaps the connection to the generator and even maybe the armature of the generator itself. The most common thing you may see if it did ingest water would be bent connecting rod(s) and blown head gasket. A severe case might have stopped the engine so suddenly that the generator rotor sheared the connection to the engine crankshaft.

Water ingress into a stopped engine would more likely result in simply a stuck engine unless it was cranked with water in the cylinders in which case the above description of bent rods might apply.

You may have a good engine which can be loosened up with only some penetrating oil put into the cylinders through the injector holes, or you may have some scrap iron that's uneconomical to repair due to the damage it sustained when it stopped.

You'll probably wind up with both the head and oil pan off it to really find out. You could be dealing with an overheated engine which has seized. Might be a good idea to pressure check the cooling system before you disassemble things to find where/if there are any internal leaks.

Hay guys thanks for the reply's.
I have more information.

First what you guys requested the Onan model and s/n number.

On the 21.5 kw

Model# MDKAE-4480242
S/N E00097734

On the 27.5 kw

Model# MDKAF-3387329
S/N A0000437329

Now for more information.

I don't know for shore that the engines ingested water running or other wise I only assumed so because I found what looked like salt crystals in the intake. More so on the smaller unit.

I removed the valve cover on the larger unit and found the valves to be in pristine condition not one bit of corrosion or salt crystals.

I also removed the exost maifold of the larger unit and found a great deal of crusty carbon deposits but no salt cristals.

The only other things there are is a locked starter on the larger unit and the stop/run solenoid is frozen.

The smaller unit the starter and stop/run solenoid are fine was thinking of just swapping them.

Hope this information helps.

Also

I would like to take the gen end off to see if that is acutely locked up.

IS there any kinds of books tips or tricks to getting it off.

If any one knows of any part numbers for books on ether the generator or engine and ware to get them that would be great.

Thanks guys for all you help.

What are the model numbers of your engines, should be a sticker on the valve cover. If no sticker, look for a series of stamped numbers on block just below the injection pump gasket surface. You could remove the heads and inspect the bores, It takes about 30 minutes to remove them.
