Hi

My wife purchased a 1/7 or 1.5 inch to the foot model 10 wheel locomotive about 3 years ago. Paid $10,000. for it. Two years befor that she purchase a 1/7 scale of the Friend of Charleston. Paid $3,000.for that. Both in running order.

She is looking for a 1/4 scale steam tractor. We find they run between 5 & 10,000.

If you have access to heavy transport, many times it's a heck of a lot cheaper to buy a full-scale engine than a quality model. :-) You can buy a running Case 65 for $25k or so. A good 1/2 scale will run you $30-35k. Go figure. Actually, you can buy a good used semi and trailer for less than you can buy a new 1/2 truck and trailer, if you shop carefully.

Did you mean to post this topic in the toy engine forum? If so, most of these replies are way off base. If not, get ready to work some overtime.

'Day all, yes he meant to post in the "toy" steam , not model steam, David's my grandson, and is interested in toy steam engines, not your thousand dollar models.

G`day Lyle
I`m not a full scale steam person (a bit big for me). I like small (toy) steam engines, not fancy $1000 models or full scale trains and such. Sorry I was not more spefic, my bad.

I would suggest starting at flea markets, swap meets and your local engine rallies. Ebay is another option, but shipping might be expensive unless it's in your home country. If you're looking for one to run and play with, I would probably start with a Jensen or Wilesco engine. They are fairly common, and at least Wilesco is still producing engines; I'm not sure about Jensen. After you get some experience and decide to branch out, then I would suggest looking at makers like Empire, Weeden, Fleischman, etc. When you get really serious you can move into the high end German toys like Bing, Ernst Plank, and Marklin. The detail on the German toys is second to none!

Yes, Jensen is still in business and they have retained their quality over the years like the other toy steam companies have not been able to do. Their boilers are still all heavy guage brass and silver soldered with heavy nickle plate.

Hello David Downs

My wife is a "Train" person. She has "G" gage trains and the 1.5 inch to the foot models.

Ebay had a nice "G" sizes steam tractor go for $152 a week or so ago.

Keep watching you will find something.

Good grades and the engine is yours? Sounds like a good deal for everybody. Homework first then play with the engine.
Good job Grandpa!
