Default 1922 Waukesha Info

Hi,
I have a 1922 IR compressor with a model BUX53 Waukesha 4cyl 3&1/4 x 5&1/4. I am interested in finding out some general info on it. Was this model also used in some trucks too? I would also like to find some sources for parts/manuals.

My unit is not running but turns over, I need to do a valve job and some other work. However it is complete, and has a governor and what appears to be an unloader/idle control.

Thanks,
Scott

Wauk's BUX (sometimes listed as B.U.X; I have no idea why) was used in both trucks and tractors. I'll run a couple of my period catalogs tomorrow for any relatively familiar names.
My 1930 McCord shows it as one of a series: B, BUX, BU4R, BUXF and BX (and maybe more) and shows them all as 33/4 (not 31/4) x 51/4. (The "53" would be the variation /works number; these came with an array of accessories, ignitions, etc for the various users). A couple rings catalogs agree on the bore.
For a manual I'd try the Wauk engine historical society, assuming there's none on EBay at the moment. They provide copies of manuals "...no longer available from Dresser...", but I don't know their costs (I'm only familiar with Wauk manuals of the 50s and 60s; these use the terms "Operators" and "Service" loosely; be sure that whatever it's called it has full overhaul info). They have no parts, but might be able to suggest places to try.
I'll find my parts notes and advise some outfits other posters have mentioned for obsolete Wauk parts; I don't know of any particular one that specializes in old Wauks.

This one was also powered by a Waukesha BUX.

Thumbs up Re: 1922 Waukesha Info

Bud
Thanks for the information I 'd say you're right about the bore , the brass tag is a little worn.
Opposed Pistone,
Mine is not from Washington, but spent a number of years on a farm in Colchester,CT (since at least 1960's) then with another collector. The pictures you have are the same as the unit I have. I was wondering if the carb I have was a replacement but it appears that the one in your picture is the same. It is interesting that mine also had lost its original iron trucks and was mounted similarly on an old truck axle. I know of one other unit in Connecticut, which is also unrestored but it is still on the original wheels- I can't remember if they were hard rubber or steel.
I also note they had the same burnout on that exhaust manifold. Mine is about in the same condition, although all disassmbled.

Some places to try for your Wauk parts:
arrowengine.com (not on the list they support, but site says to inquire);
continentalengines.com;
egge.com;
foleyengines.com;
georgemillermachine.com (repotedly bought an old Wauk dealers inventory, including valves and guides);
industrialenginerebuilders.com (not sure they sell parts);
jobbersinc.com (reportedly pricey);
mandmsurplus.com Brooklyn,NY;
millsmotorparts.com;
Obsolete Ind'l Engine (Frank) 916-655-3185.
Others can probably suggest more; I don't have any dates on your engine, but it's in a 36 King Products catalog, but NOT in a 44 Sealed Power or 45 Hastings catalogs. Good luck.

That website sure doesn't work; I Googled it and came up with a number of posts that referred to it. Two others were mentioned: gmachine.com and gmachine@aaahawk.com, and neither of them worked.
BUT I ran down some posts that said it was a man who posted on ytmag as "georgeMD". So:
Go to ytmag; in the "search" box put in "georgemd"; seven hits will come up. Click on #6 (about a Wauk exhaust manifold) and when it comes up keep clicking on "show entire topic" until you find his post (a rather waspish comment). The box containing his post says "email open" in the lower right corner. By that you can send him an email thru the ytmag site. His other posts weren't nearly as sharp as the manifold post!!
