Default Horse drawn equipment forum?

I've noticed MORE and MORE searches for iron, engines, tractors and steam lead to the Stak.
Is there ENOUGH interest in having a "horse drawn" forum?
The isn't much on the net elsewhere........so why not here?
I've added a blind poll which will run for one week.

Harold.......

ANYWAY......what prompted this was an email from a member here asking if I knew of any site geared to this sort of thing. A quick googling proved there's NOT MUCH......
Knowing how beautifully done line catalogs can be.......wouldn't it be wonderful to have an archive of that information!

HAROLD.........was it YOU who voted "WHAT'S A HORSE".......

I didn't want to be a smarty, but I thought of it. A horse is something you put water in it and build a fire in it. Isn't it?
Actually if you would go to a horse pull, feel the ground, hear the snorts and watch the muscles flex you will then understand true horsepower. I think it's a good idea I'm for it.

We have over 150 horse drawn mowers with very few repeats and only have about 35 of them restored. McCormick alone made 127. It would be nice to show some of our horse equipment to all who are interested!

I voted YES, but how about a general Animal Powered Antiques forum, to include horse drawn, horse powers, etc.?

Today was a beautiful day so we began training our 6 month old Australian Shepherd puppy to power our 1881 dog treadmill display. He doesn't seem to mind the motion or the noise from the tracks, and he loves the snacks he gets as rewards, so I think he'll work out well for our demonstration.

This photo is actually from Wikipedia, but our family has this exact same setup, including the direct drive barrel churn. We have a catalog photo showing this brand treadmill and churn sold as a set.

Great idea. Just last Saturday I was out with the boys for a hog hunt in the central California foothills. I see an old farm house along a back road and we decide to investigate a little. Low and behold, next to the old house is a horsedrawn Deering mower. I get home and and check the Stak and then Google and not much info available. I agree with Craig, would be nice to have something here.

Bob

There is certainly lots of "Horse Drawn" equipment here on the Stak already, mostly in the Farm + Industrial forum.

Search: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...earch&aq=f&oq=

Brings back 1968 memories of the first farm Jeannie and I bought where all the "barn fresh" equipment was included and most all of it was horse drawn. It was all that we had and there wasn't money for a new Ford with a 3pt hitch rotary mower, so I kept the fields cleared with these old mowers: a John Deere and a McCormick Deering in photo 1. I quickly learned about riveting points onto the sickle bar.

All the old horse tack was still in one barn and I remember that there was a cast iron water trough in the corner of one horse stall. (No horses.) That same barn included old Model T parts, the 1932 GPO and a John Deere single row corn harvester. Outside was an old hay rake and a hay loader. Also lots of old plows and drags. We had it all, but we didn't really know it at the time. After we sold out and moved out, that old barn went down one winter from the snow load on its roof.

Other barns had cow stanchions, a manure spreader, a horse drawn Diplomat wagon, saw mill blades, a large corn sheller, huge chicken feeders, crates and egg baskets. The place was a treasure trove! The furnished house had a wood burning cook stove and it came with the old Easy wringer washer and a cream separator. My mother exclaimed: Junk, nothing but junk!", but we bought the place anyway. That chance will never happen again in a lifetime.

I voted yes.
Horses piss me off, but I like some of the iron they would drag around. I have several pieces that I pull with some of my tractors. This type of forum would help collectors find, buy, resource, and restore horse powered implements. That is always a good thing for iron hounds.

Don't know much about horse-powered equipment, but being from down in the South, I DO know a little bit about MULE powered equipment.... have tamped hay and tied wires on my dad's Chattanooga mule hay baler quite a bit when he was showing it at the local shows when I was around 14-15 yrs old (seems like quite a long time ago, now! )

We took it down to one show we were at in conjunction with a farts-n-crafts show at Olive Branch, MS. A fellow named Mike Stafford brought down a couple of mules to power it for us, an older and younger mule. This was a single-power baler, so only needed one mule at a time. Put the older mule on there first....no problem. Later on, to give the old mule a rest, he planned on putting the younger (read "high-strung") mule on there....who got loose....and started heading towards all the farts-n-crafts displays...........luckily caught the darn thing before it tore up anything.....

Was quite a neat day when at another local show when the former owner of the baler who used it back in the day showed up to show us how it was done "back in the day". It's days like that that helps remind us why we preserve this old junk.

Last year, when looking at a tractor collection, got to meet the owners mules, who were in the same pasture as the collection. Was quite apprehensive about being around a bunch of mules...'til I figured out all of 'em just wanted to follow me around and be petted like a bunch of big puppy dogs!

Mike
