Default 1904 "Waterman" 2 cyl-2-stroke inboard

Guys:

My grandfather owned this little 2 cylinder inboard for many years. After his passing, my uncle loaned it to a local museum to display. I know the year and make, but anyone out there have any idea if it's rare or not and an approximate worth? We may be in discussion to retrieve it as the museum is not displaying it as the agreement stated. In either case, I'm keeping it in the family.

Tom,
Nice looking engine. They are not extremely rare but the copper jackets & light weight make them pretty collectible for a 2-cycle marine engine. Could not see the carb in photo which is usually Breeze or Kingston 4 or 5-ball carburetor. I would say probably in $1000 range.

I have a waterman K-2 like yours, built by Pausin Engineering in 1917. It is mounted on a fire pump. the design goes back ti the 1890s, and the engine has seen many uses. it has ales been canned a Dispro engine, Dispro is a trade mark of the Disappearing Propeller Co.. These marine drives were retractable to allow shallow water operation. I agree the engine is unique, and makes a great display piece. The engine design was used into the 1930s.

That is the K-1 series engine. Rated at 21/2 HP. The K-2 twins were rated at 5 HP. The watermans were made up to 4 cylinders!

I have 3 of the K2 Waterman's, Most were sold in the teens and twenties, 2 of mine are the fire pump versions and one is the canoe motor type, I also have a couple of the outboard motors in my collection. I think Doug about is pretty close as to value. I see a few up forsale every year. You gotta grab them when they show up.

Its a British make called Watermota, dates from mid 1920's, and the model is K2.
I have a hand book, I think.
Value, well in the UK I would say in running order around £350

I just purchased what I assume by photos and Wendell, is a Pausin but no nametag or anything to identify it by. The distributor cap is missing so maybe this had some info on it. I would appreciate some photos of the cap and inside if possible. No wires to show how the ignition was hooked up either. All that is there is a home-made handle and a pin with a roller on it. The gears for the timing are stripped so need to make new ones. See you at a show sometime.

Pausin Engineering, of Newark NJ only made pumps for about 2 years. The Waterman engine design has been made by quite a few manufacturers. My Pausin has a unique chain drive Bosch magneto, not a distributer. Your engine might be a Waterman or Dispro. The Pausin has a brass medallion soldered to the rear cylinder, with the company name on it.

Hi Tom
I have a K-2 Waterman that I picked up 2 years ago . I was happy to pay the fellow 1000 for it.
The fly wheel on mine has been changed to one made of steel plate, but the rest of the engine is still the same as it was when it was removed from a boat complete with the transmission and the wooden sils that it sat on in the boat.
I`ll see if I can load up a photo of it. or you can see it Old MARINE ENGINE, web site.

Hi Axton Jim S
I certainly would like to see some photos of your Waterman. I desperately need a distributor or at least photos so I can make one. I could have my friend in Bradner take measurements and photos if that would be okay with you.
Thanks.

Hi Jim C My waterman has a timer not a distributor, you may have a Dispro or ? Have your buddy in Bradner give me a land line anyway.

Hi Jim. It could be a timer as I am not too sure what is missing, just from photos on the internet. I will get Ruby (you met her) to contact you and make arrangements to see and photograph your timer. No wiring with this engine so need to know how and where it was wired and was the spark provided by Model T coils? Will you be at any of the shows in the Interior? Thanks, Jim

Question Re: 1904 "Waterman" 2 cyl-2-stroke inboard

Between the flywheel, is there a bevel gear or a chain sprocket?

Andrew, in post #3 above you said these copper top engines went back as far as the 1890's, I do a bit of research on old marine engs and would like to know your source on that info if possible.
Waterman Marine Motor Co. founded by Cameron B. Waterman a Yale Attorney Designed the Porto outboard in 1906 and began mfging in that year, by 1908 he added small inboard engs these were cast iron engs, Waterman added the copper jacketed engs a few years after that. None of the inboards were waterman design he bought them from other mfgrs !

Hi JimC, Go to the old marine engine web site and on the search window print in Waterman K2 or K1. There is tons of info that will help you find your ansewer. The engine I have is at my home shop, I have so many of these engines that they are stored in three differant spots, that way if something happens I won`t loose all of them.
Cheers Jim

Hi JimS
I now have a timer for the "Waterman". I am working on a Vivian and need info re retarding/advancing the mag as it only has a direct drive and no apparent easy adjustment with the mag that was on the engine. Any help appreciated.
