Chris,
Looks to me like the starter is a little weak. Next time, let Dad start it and you do the driving.

Chris, I bet I got a good idea what you were saying under your breath about the third time you had to go to the back. I see you got a temp gage on it, also you bypassed the fuel heater. I had mine on the sawmill a while back and the gas started to boil in the mixer. After I bypassed it we ran the threshing machine all day with it. Boy do I ever like the sound clacktaclackata of the pushrods. Best music I ever heard.

Nice tour of the tractor Chris! I've never been around when someone started their Rumely so I've never seen it done. And I agree, that sound is mesmerizing! See you at the shows.

Very Nice sounding gears... Must have done mostly Belt work.... Thats a Honey...

As Long as were in the Youtube forum here is another Rumely likely a few years older... Trouble is it only runs on one cylinder...

I guess I posted this one sometime somewhere........but here it is again.......

My "Stambaugh" S....... (#69.......1926)

(the remarks about the timing lettering on the flywheel are a joke as to whether they are in English or Spanish......)

First video posted; Needs a little more spark retardation, would make it much easier to start.

Well I posted this before also But I don't think it's on the you tube forum... Here we are burning Gasoline, Diesel Fuel and Water... And Yes you do need Water to pull a 5 bottom plow in High gear... This is the Smaller Brother to Craigs S, It's a 1926 R... The guys that seen it before can just Scroll on by.... I bought this at Freddies threshing show liquidation auction in about 1993 or so..

I think Chris's starting problem has something to do with Too Much Prime.... It makes a Big difference how the tractor is sitting as far as priming goes... If one end is low the fuel will just run in and if it's the other way it will take more priming...

I picked up a Model M Belsaw last fall... Just the Right size for a 16 - 30... So one of these days will add a 16-30 lumber sawing Video.... But will wait untill the ground firms up and I pound on the saw...

Yes, it was flooded.

I don't see how retarding the spark is going to help. In my experience, it makes it a whole lot harder to start. If the engine doesn't kick why retard it further?

The Impulse should click on or very slightly after TDC.... The points should be Just Opening when the spark mark on the flywheel lines up with the pointer assuming it in in the correct place.... Most Rumely's used a 35 Degree lag angle.

If you retard the spark Too Much the engine will Labor and Run HOT... Not Good with a Oil Cooled engine...

Your Timing sounds Just Fine to me....

Yep, thats how it is timed.

Not that it is that critical, but I even measured and marked the flywheel with whatever the correct advance is (35 deg. sounds right) and checked it with a timing light.

I had my mag rebuilt a couple years ago and the man who did it put a small pin on the mag so I cant adjust it anymore. I timed it at TDC and it starts and runs real nice. When I timed it I turned it over till the mag clicked, then back it up till TDC. I set the points so they start to open just a little before TDC. It starts and runs better then ever before now.

Great videos!

Still a heck of a lot faster than getting the horses hitched.

Ken, I said what I did about the spark because it was firing before top dead center causing the flywheel to turn backwards... He did set the impulse retard switch in the video. If the timing was set properly there would be no chance for mag to fire early like it was doing in the video.

I thought it was just rolling backward on compression...???

Well... I watched the Video Again... And Not once did I see the engine Fire Before TDC.... Yes it did bounce back from Compression... Any Healthy engine will do that... Even if you Take the Mag Clear off...

It did fire with a valve open once but that is Normal in a waste spark engine that is Flooded.

What I would suggest to Chris is that he Prime the engine with a squirt can instead of using the choke as when you are by yourself it's real easy to flood when using the choke.

What I do if a start a 2 cylinder engine using the choke I just back it up and run it through that free spot with the choke on then put the choke off then roll it over... It sure saves a lot of cranking with a Big Engine.

Yeah, it was bouncing against compression. If it had been kicking back, I sure wouldn't be grabbing the flywheel to stop it like I was in the video.
