Price of a J.D. model "E" 1.5 HP, 1945

I am a newbie here and really have the "old iron bug". It's almost as bad as "new car fever" LOL ...

Default Price of a J.D. model "E" 1.5 HP, 1945

I am a newbie here and really have the "old iron bug". It's almost as bad as "new car fever" LOL

I understand that any item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it but what I am looking for is a general idea of how much you experienced guys would expect to pay for a John Deere Model E 1.5 HP that dates to 1945. It is supposed to be complete, pristine, running, unrestored and unmolested.

The asking price is $900 in El Paso, Texas

Is that in the ballpark? too high, too low ?

Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

John in Odessa

They are overpriced all around if you ask me, there was a TON made. I am woking on a 1.5 myself I would give 500.00 to 700.00 for it.

Here in Wisconsin one in the rough is usually around $800.00 to 850. If it is complete and not broken it's not a bad price. The main part is the magneto. That in itself is a $350.00 item. go for it. Arlie

This is an E that I restored several years ago..I sold it to a man and just recently bought it back from him...it runs as good as any I've seen, doesn't leak oil and is in terrific shape...because I wanted one that I had restored I paid a bit of a premium for it....just a small amount more than what you are discussing...that's a general idea for a fully restored one on a cart. As was said, check condition and make sure of the mag.

I paid $200 for one just like you wrote about....in 1983. They have always been overpriced.

Even though it doesn't seem like it should be worth that kind of money, it probably is not too far off in your location in the condition it is in.

Sounds from your description that it is "in the ball park". I agree that most of them are over priced today but they are a sweet running engine.

You can always find one cheaper but you take your chances when you cannot "inspect before you buy" with sites like ebay, plus you need to factor in shipping. If it is what you desire then go for it, if you find another one for less later you can always resell. If you are in this hobby as a collector then the price does not matter too much as long as it is in the ball park which this one sounds to be, if you are in it to make $ then the I would shop around.
Just My Opinon, your results may vary.

How soon will you find another like that in Texas?

An engine like that at auction would probably bring $1100.

Sure they're overpriced.......and seem to be going higher right along.......

How soon in Texas? Why, March 26-28 to be exact with plenty to be had at the Armstrong estate auction. There's a thread here a week or two back about it and check out this link.

I found one JD model E, 1.5 hp in one of my auction lists (quite limited since I only keep records of engines I see on ebay that interest me or engines sold at auctions I attend); it sold for $1000 in September 2008 at an auction in either MD or PA.

I'll try to remember this evening to look for a 3 hp on my list at home.

The cart (or lack of a cart) will make a big difference in the value.
An original Deere cart alone will easily bring $400 while a home-built cart is always good for adding $50-100.
It sure does help to have a few pictures of what's for sale when trying to guestimate a value!

Here are the prices I have on my main auction list, I don't have notes on condition nor whether they were on carts:

14 JD 1.5 hp ranged from $700 to 3500; most in the 900 - 1100 range;
5 JD 3 hp ranged from $850 to 4050.

Before anyone asks, I have no idea why one 1.5 hp went for $3500 and one 3 ho went for $4050.

Sounds like two or more rich boys were determined to take it home with them.

I have sold a couple of JD 3 HP EK engines for $5,000 each. They were both restored, good runners, and one was on a cart. They came out of Argentina.
For an ordinary 1 1/2 HP E JD restored I get $950.
