The Lauson RSC is a very common engine, and most RSC parts are interchangeable. You see a lot of Stewart Warner Lauson parts on eBay from time to time also, so you could probably get the engine running again if you choose to. You may just need to clean it's points. Most of the Lausons I get just need minor work to get them running.

Is the engine on the Stewart Warner heater ? Could you post some pictures. I’ve never seen one and have wondered what they look like.

Thanks

Lauson RSC 514-4 pictures and Stewart Warner 782 heater ( from a Canso I think. It needs a X3404D coil and then it would run.

The devices are Stewart-Warner Southwind Portable Heating Units, Model 782. They embrace (a) a Lauson R. S. C., ball bearing, air cooled, 1˝ H.P., one cylinder, 4-cycle internal combustion engine, with attached magneto; (b) a Stewart-Warner Heater, combustion type, with over-heat switch and Champion spark plug, and (c) a special super-charger, turbine-type blower. Each device functions as a unit. The internal combustion engine must first be started. It then drives the magneto which supplies electricity to the spark plug on the Stewart-Warner Heater to cause combustion of gasoline in the latter, which combustion is the source of heat produced by the unit, and it drives the turbine-type blower so that the latter forces the hot air out of the heater, into three ducts connected with hoses or tubes by which the heat is conducted to the place of use.

Just found this entry when I searched for Stewart Warner 782. I own two of these. I just started working on them again. I remember being fascinated by the unusual running ... After it ran for a few minutes, it would suddenly run real slow, and continue to run real slow forever. They produce a tremendous amount of heat, and since it is an 'air exchanger' there is NO smell of fuel.

I found out that someone I know also has one. Mine was hard to start. I asked him what procedure he used for starting his. He said that he just turns on the switch. Come to find out that he had replace the Lauson 1.5hp engine with an electric motor. Lost the 'portability' factor but really improved the reliability of the heat.

If anyone has information on the operation of these units, I would REALLY like to hear about it.
