Default Cylinder plans for basic rotary steam/air engine.

Hi folks.

I want to build something similar to these engines.

However, I can't find plans for the cylinder/piston anywhere. Can anyone direct me? TIA.

I've never built one but it's just a simple single acting piston valve engine. The air pushes the piston down and as it comes back up the valve allows the exhaust pressure to escape. I haven't seen plans for anything like this but there might be something on one of the model engine forums.

As you may have already noticed, neither of the Youtube videos you linked are steam engines. They are both pneumatic (compressed air). Small difference I know, but hey, steam is a bit hotter than compressed air to work with and usually needs a boiler!

That said, I haven't built one of those scrap-piece-hobo engines either. I do know they are much harder than they look to build because you MUST know how the valve timing works. {I have long been fascinated by a Hobo engine built by an old gentleman who used an automobile master brake cylinder from a junk car as a cylinder/piston assembly for live steam. It rocked as an oscillator and was a simple marvel to see run.}

Have you SEARCHed this site for a place to start? Like in a thread such as this >>> http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22985

Or Google search for topics like this >>>> http://npmccabe.tripod.com/steam.htm
Or, One of the simplest pneumatic (or CO2) engine designs is this>> http://www.animatedengines.com/co2.shtml

I wish I could offer more help, but perhaps you might simply try and copy a toy engine cylinder/piston/valve mechanism from a known engine (Mamod, Wilesco etc) onto a piece of heavy paper cardstock. That paper cardstock copy could help you get the "design" fixed before you make it work in a scrap metal piece.

If you can find a "Elmer's Engine" book, it has all sorts of little compressed air/steam engines in it. They are all made from bar stock. I will look through mine to see if there is anything close. Till later, Larry

Try Google "live steam engines" You will find all kinds of drawings in that category. Small upright engines, mill engines, locomotives and even small gas engine models.

Don’t worry about running them on air. We all test run them on air before building a fire.

HI, I just went through my "Elmer's Engines " book and I do not see anything like what you are looking for. There are some very simple basic type engines that could fit in the palm of your hand. I know the book is out of print. If interested, drop me an email and I will scan a couple of them for you to look at. Till later, Larry
