Default Fairbanks Morse ZS 1 horse engine

Today I bought a 1926 Fairbanks Morse model ZS 1 horse serial number 001. The previous owner got it from a grain operation where it sat in the rafters to run equipment. The base of the engine is cast to slip between and sit on the rafters. Also the whole engine is encased with only the flywheel, mag, and carburetor showing. Also it has a dipstick and holds all its oil in the crankcase. It has five throttle settings and runs by hitting four times and then missing about just as many times. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this engine or where I might information on it.

What you have there is a Fairbanks ZD, common engine, good runners and a lot of info on here as well as from the sponsors. I am wondering about that serial number though, usually the serial number is stamped on a raised boss area on top of the engines water hopper.

I believe that it is a ZS because the serial tag is ZS001 on the raised boss area on the hopper.

Sounds more like an eclipse to me....Got any photos?
They were hit & miss, single flywheel, one horsepower, Mixer and tank attaches to the top of the cylinder, enclosed crank. and I believe the casting numbers began with "ZS" on most of the castings.

I have to correct myself because it is actually a throttle governed engine. It has the gas tank under the engine with a carburetor on the flywheel side of the motor. It has a single flywheel with an offset power take off. Although the fairbanks tag is missing on the hopper it has the same outline as my Fairbanks Morse 1.5 horse model z engine. Also it has a Fairbanks Morse Magneto. I will try to take some pics soon.

Yeah, That's probably a 1 1/2 horse model "ZD". Commonly called a "Salt block" engine because of it's square shape...The camshaft runs a pulley at half speed off of the opposite side of the flywheel...Numbers don't sound right though???

Does it look like this? If so, it is a model D. Sometimes called a saltblock engine. This was the last style they made, (as far as I know).
