Default Buffalo 4 Cylinder Type DE Oil Field Engine

Ive just aquired a big Buffalo engine with all the oil field drilling stuff. Its been out in the weather since 1940s. What HP is the engine? Is it rare? Its marked pat 1926 and the tag says Buffalo Type DE . Is the other drilling cable wheels worth bringing home?Is the clutch assembly on this engine worth saving??? Please advise/I have the carb and mag, they were put away OVER 50 years ago and I got them from safe keeping. The turned over just a few years ago. It doesnt show any freeze cracks. Please advise .Thank you Mike West Livonia NY 585 738 1541

Get everything you can. You definitely don't see a Buffalo engine very often. I think your engine may be around 80-85 horsepower. Do you have any pictures of it?

Mike,

Like we chatted on the phone, the DE I had was rated at 80 hp and weight was 6500 lbs. They are well built and good running engines. Not real rare, but fun to play with if you can handle big iron. I have some original literature and other pictures of Buffalo stuff if you need more info. Watch out for a burned out and or cracked manifold as this was a common problem.

Thanks for the call and we'll chat again.

Mike - Unfortunately old Buffalo isn't mine. Nor do know it's owner. It's however a "regular" at the Alexander show - I've seen it on display and running there the past 8 - 10 years now.

You going to try to get yours going?

Mikewest: Don't have any real info on a DE (or any other Buffalo!), but do have a listing for one in a 39 Hastings ring catalog, under both the "Stock Engine" section and the " Marine Engine" section (all the Buffalo's are listed in both places).
If actually used in marine applications, some of the old-boat sites may have tech info and/or parts sources.
Good luck.
