Default Dayton 5000w generator, no AC output voltage

Hi guys,
I have a Dayton 5ooow generator with an 11 hp B&S engine.
Model number 4W109A
that runs fine @3600 rpm but has extremely low voltage output{around 1.1vac}.
It has only 2 brushes that seem to have continuity through them with pretty low resistance.
There appear to be no capacitors.
It is making 60 cycles{looks good on a scope}, but only a little over 1 volt AC.
I did attempt to flash it with a 12volt booster pack through the 110 v outlet both at rest and running. It does spark when I did so, but the output voltage remains around 1volt.
During flashing, the ac voltage got as high as 18 volts when the engine was running, but immediately goes back to 1 volt once the dc power is removed.
I have no history on this unit to share, but the electrical end of it was opened up and some of the wires unplugged at the panel, though i believe they are back where they are supposed to be. A diagram or schematic would be tremendously helpful in confirming this.
The wiring from the panel, all enters the generator through 2 multi cavity plugs.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Dave

There should be some diodes around somewhere to supply your field current from the AC output. Do you have them?

Hi Kent,
There is a small circuit board ounted inside the back of the cover if these are the diodes you are referring to. All the components of this board are set in something like an epoxy making testing them individually a challenge, particularly without a schematic.
Do you have a suggestion on what or how to test here?
Thanks,
Dave
