I picked this one up a couple of weeks ago at an auction (it was too much of a bargain to let it get away.) It is an Anderson made in NZ. There are quite a few Andersons in Australia so I presume there must have been an agent over here.

Hi there. If you give me the serial number I can tell you what year it is. I have a 1928 Anderson 3hp s/n 6533 which has spoked flywheels. You'll have a lot of fun restoring that, they sound nice when they run. By the way, yours is very original. The cooling tank, petrol tank, mag, carb, even the pedestal is of original Anderson design.
I can put up pics of restored ones similar to yours if you want to use them for colour reference.Heres a pic of mine, just gota paint it and fit the cooling tank.

I wonder if you can date my Anderson & tell me the horsepower? Serial # 4221. Flywheels are 18" x 3 1/2". It came as a pile of pieces & since the pictures has been cleaned up into a nice running engine.

Alright, looked up the Anderson serial number list today and here's what I got.
Fred, your Anderson was made in 1923 and a total of 479 were built that year. Patrick, your Anderson IS made in 1922, with a total of 430 built during that year. Anyone else need a year for their Anderson, let me know and I will look up the serial number on the year list.

Thanks for the info. Now another question- does anyone have an original crank & if so could a picture of it be posted? Mine is kind of hard to start by just grabbing the flywheels & spinning it fast enough to get the mag to fire.

If anyone needs Anderson parts I can probably help out. Patrick is your engine missing the air intake?

I should finally have a chance to have a good look over my engine on the weekend. I am not sure what it missing off it (yet). The one thing I know I am missing is the magneto chain guard.

That's a slightly different handle to the one I have, it doesn't have what looks like a round flat washer on the side of it. Never seen one like it. I'll get a pic of mine tomorrow and you'll see the difference. If you need a chain guard our club has a boxfull of them, I can pull one out for you....
