Default Two man Mall WOOHOO!!!

My neighbor who has been a family friend for 60 years has now had to go into a senior living environment. I had done a major clean up of his property, detailing and removing trees, shrubs vines and brush plus general junk. After going to collect for my services he had told me that I could help myself to his tools saws, shop equip etc. Of particular interest he wanted to insure tha I got his early Mall 2-man saw that has been under the workbench for60+ years. It was used last when he built a log cabin for his bride. Will be grabbing it soon before someone else gets there mitts on it. Supposed to be complete to the last nut but he said the clutch had been removed for service. I'll get pics up as soon as I open the shop doors.

Bill

Now I'll have to build a two tiered mantle for the mall and the 090. Axes and misery whips will have to find another room to reside in. Thank God I'm still single or is it I'm still single cuz all of my hobbies?

Well I got the Mall today along with a mac 1010. The Mall is a mdl 10 with a 38inch bar and is absolutely complete stem to stern. No broken castings and turns over. I'm wanting to take the carb down and clean it and the tank out and try to start it. Does anyone have the mix specs for this and an owners manual that I can get copied. The clutch and drum are new and the bar and chain appear to have low run time.

This sounds like fun. When do we see pics?

I have a manual on the Mall 2MG. It calls for 3/4 pint S.A.E. 30 with 1 gallon 72 octane.

Hi Peter

I was out of town this weekend trying to beat the heat to no avail. I will get pics on in a few days. 30wt oil in low grade gas? Sounds odd. I would think two stroke oil of some ratio. I was presuming this was a two stroke. Is it a four? I haven't even looked at it closely enough yet. Guess I better take a better look...

30wt is what was used in most saws probably until the 60's. The majority of mine use a 1/2 pt of 30W to the gallon. The exception is my Mall at 3/4pt and my Titans at 1pt of 50W per gallon. I don't have any manuals for my stuff so I can't tell you about the octane.

Thanks for the oil mix info. I'll take it at face value and give it a try. Should this be a straight 30wt non detergent oil?

I assume the 72 octane was a min and higher grade no problem? I dont think it would do any harm to just take some of your modern 2 stroke gas/oil mix and add the needed 30 wt oil in that? I really doubt these old saws that particluar that a few drops synthetic would do any harm as long as you got the 30 wt in there.

Thanks to everyone for their input on my project. I promise to get pics on here soon as I get a camera available. In the meantime, I got a chance to look it over today after taking the pressure washer to it. Lacking spark, I pulled the starter housing and flywheel off. After removing the coil mount I cleaned the ignition parts, checked the coil and condenser and put it back together. With the plug out I can spin the clutch by hand and now have the fattest and hottest blue/white spark I have ever seen. I don't want to grab it thats for sure. Reassembled everything and mixed a gallon of gas with 30wt and put some in the tank. The tank was dry but smelled stale and otherwise clean. Turned on the petcock and closed the choke. After about 7 pulls without a pop except for my back LOL, I took the drain screw out of the fuel bowl. An Oily sludge oozed out of it and then gas slowly started to appear. I fugure that all the passages are also plugged with old oil from the evaporated gas that must have been left in it when put out of service. The petcock was partially open before I started on it so the fuel probably drained out throuh the carb over time leaving the oil residue. My plan it to pull the carb down and clean it. Reinstall and try starting it again. I know if the least amount of fuel gets to the cylinder this thing is going to run.
This mdl 10 has a Tillotson --23a. Couldn't read the prefix with it mounted on the motor. Are there kits available for these? Does anyone have a Mdl 10 manual I can get copies from? Does anyone have a Mdl 10? and, is there a way to date the saw from the vin?

I'll add more as I progress

Bill

Ooops, I took the carb of today to clean it and dropped it on the table and broke the throttle control lever from the shaft.. Anyone have a tilly md12a carb core I can scavenge for the part or a whole carb to sell. I was so ready to get this started today. Inside of the carb was spotless except for the oily gunk in the bowl plugging up the float needle. HeeeLPPPPPPP!!!

Hi Everyone!!!

Today was a good day for the Mall mdl 10. After I returned from the weekend I found the carb repaired thanks to my DoD (Dear old Dad). Put the carb back on, turned on the gas, set the choke and on the 3rd pull the engine lit off and idled. Ran the saw up to set the high idle screw and then the low idle screw. Smokes enough to fumigate the swaps of Louisianna. So much so I couldn't breathe. LOL ! I was surprised that these are a low RPM engine. Muffler was amazingly quiet for its size.I will try to get pics on in the next few days...still trying to find a camera.
