Default Sears and Roebuck 3500 watt alternator identification help

Hello,

I am looking for information on an older Sears Craftsman 3500watt alternator.

MOD# 580 321-821
SER# 0342199 115/230v
33.4/15.2

There is no doubt this one will need an engine as there is a large hole in the crankcase and the piston rod is now on display. I have perused the web and come up empty. I kinda like the old machine and would try to save her if I could find out what make of engine she had so I could start posting for another. Any and all help/knowledge/links to manuals would greatly appriciated. My sincere thanks to all of you.

Brian

should be able to use any generator engine of the same hp or close to.so 5 or 6 hp will be fine if its a 3600rpm set.

Brian-

The 580 translates to Generac, and the Sears part numbers are usually Generac part numbers. You may have to add "GL" at the end of the number as a result of Generac becoming associated with Briggs & Stratton a few years back.

Have you checked at the Sears web site? If you go to sears.com and click on parts, you can enter the model number as 580321821. There may be some mention of the engine source. If the Craftsman manual is still available, it may have more information about the engine than the similar Generac generator manual.

Generac has used different engines over the years. My Sears Craftsman 3500 Watt generator has a different model number than yours. It was purchased about 15 years ago, and uses a Generac-Nagano GN-190 engine rated at 6.5 HP. This engine was used by Generac in their 3500XL generator, model 9441-5.

Thank you Ed,
Could you venture a guess as to what company made this engine? It would appear that sears would slap their name on any ol' thing but I would like to repair it back to original. and if possible find out its age to put in as close to the exact engine that came out of it. Will the MOD# OR SER# Help?

A couple of good pictures will help "us" ID the engine.

Thanks Fred,

I did check out the Sears website, although I did not try very hard as my uneducated guess places this machine at mid 60s to early 70s and I felt little or nothing would be gained. I'll dig a bit deeper there and see what turns up using the tips you gave me.Thanks again for your input.

My memory is getting old! I think the suffix is a "GS".

the engine on your generator is made by tecu. the sears model number acording to sears parts is 143.666022 this number should be able to be converted to tecu. by yiour nearest dealer. you should be able to get a short block for this engine or the model number to try and find a replacement but the crank will have to be modified because the generator aramture is held onto the engine crankby a tappered shaft ie machine shop time good luck

Parts for Tecumseh engine are getting a bit iffy as they quit building engines last year. Another company has bought the name but is still up in the air as to start building engines again or parts for the older units.

If you go to http://www.searspartsdirect.com/part...t/index.action, inter the Tecumseh engine number, 143.666022 you should get a parts list. The NAPA catalog crosses references the 143 number to an H70-130206C . There is a Tecumseh Club on Yahoo.
