You got access to a lathe Stof? I can run you through how I make mine. Its about the easiest part of a engine restoration.

Stof, get a bit of 3D cast iron from someone like Assab or Bohler or any steel merchant. Chuck in up in your 3 jaw and turn the O.D the same size as your bore diameter.Bore the Inside diameter to the dimension of one of your old rings installed in the bore. Now part the rings off to the dimension of your ring groove less the clearance you want. I make mine the same as the groove and polish with fine emery on a flat surface till they are nice fit in your piston groove. Next split the rings. I just put them in the jaws of a bolt cutter and apply a bit of pressure and they will snap cleanly.Make up a wedge or spacer out of a bit of keysteel or what ever you have and stack your rings together with the spacer holding them open to the gap you want.Sandwich them together between a couple of bits of plate with a 3/8 or whatever bolt you have to keep them nice and flat. Wrap some fireproof material around the outside of the rings to keep the direct heat of them and wire it in place. Make up a little firebrick or whatever you have to keep in the heat furnace and stick a LP torch in there and heat them to a dull red for a couple of hours and let cool out slowly. Take your plates apart and file your gaps to what you want.I've done a number of sets for myself and friends and never had a problem. If your cylinder is good you won't get any leakage. I have also made some out of ordinary scrap cast iron and they have worked good to.

you could use a set of 3/16 and put in a .030 spacer in the groove.

Try Don Reid, Vintage Engine Spares in Queensland, he advertises in TOMM and has been very helpful. He has a lot of sizes in stock.

Stof....as Ray says if you have a lathe it is easy and once you have made one set you will never buy them .Unlike Ray I use a small electric kiln does the same job as the way Rays uses .I leave it overnight to cool .I also de glaze the bore . Sometimes finding the right size Cast Iron is hard .....I am having that problem at the moment.Iam not as game as Ray ...using bolt cutters ,it is a hacksaw for me!

Hi all ,
I have heard that the makers of rings somehow snap them ,I am not game to try,so use a cut off wheel one of those 2 mm thin ones they do do a quick job and do now make the ring to hot .
Rod
PS ,I see on this forum one can thank people for their reply,s how do I do that ?

I have an old friend who spent some time in the Loco workshops in Swindon UK ...........he told me they snapped the rings by throwing them on the concrete floor!
