Default 1919 American LaFrance engine for sale.

the volunteer firemans association i belong to has an engine out of our antique Lafrance fire truck that we would like to sell to raise funds. the truck is a 1913 that was reconditioned in 1919 with pneumatic tires and a 6 cylinder engine. it is this motor that we would like to sell. we pulled it from the truck because it was so heavy we couldn't drive it for parades with out risking the original wooden wheels. so we retrofited a chevrolet 6 cylinder into it to make it a more reliable show truck. the original engine ran when we pulled it out and it has been inside in storage for about 14 years. it did run very well before we pulled it.

Edit: We normally do not accept classified ads on Smokstak, but since this is for a good cause it will stay for now. See www.enginads.com/classifieds for all your advertising.

Alf engine info is confusing, at least to someone not familiar with the company...
Mroz's truck book says Alf began mfg it's own 4's and 6's in 1909, and that after 1910 did not purchase "stock" engines...
But my engine parts catalogs, showing later Alf eqpmt, shows a mix of Buda, Lycoming and Wauk motors with their own...
Mroz doesn't say so directly, but implies there was more than one Alf 6cyl; if so, interested parties will want to know which one...
Presumably there's an engine tag, or engine ID on the bodywork tag; if none found and nothing in your paperwork, a desc (pix??) of the engine would be helpful. Good luck.

Looked up Alf in a 1917 ring catalog...
At that time Alf had 6cyl engines with 51/2, 61/4 and 71/8 bores.
Catalog set up by bore size, and for Alf gives body style number, but not Alf engine #, so can't tell if there were variations of the above three bores or not.
Later catalogs show 6's with 41/8 and 41/2 bores, but those catalogs don't list anything before 1920.

Dear Darren,
I am brand new in this forum, but I found something very interesting for me. I do have a 1921 ALF fire truck in good original condition and I want to keep it running for vintage car meetings. I could probably use that engine your are offering. How can I contact you for further information like engine number, pictures ...
Best Regards
André

With respect, you would making a mistake to sell the engine. The engine is the heart of the vehicle. Without it all you have is a chassis and body with a modern engine stuck in it: a 'bitzer'

You'll find a good cabinet shop could re-spoke your wheels, maybe in exchange for some advertising on the truck??

There is probably more than one shop in the USA that specializes in exactly this kind of work, in fact here's one I found just now: http://www.calimerswheelshop.com/Body_Frame.html

Several people I know of have had the Amish rebuild their wood spoke wheels for them.

So did you rebuild the wheels or sell the engine to avoid "risking" the wheels?

I'm not trying to be rude, but...

Sheesh...I see Cedar City, UT, is on I-13 in SW Utah, that it's not exactly a metropolis...how many Darren Maxwells could there be there??...or an email to City Hall/ Chamber of Commerce for a contact with Darren and/or the volunteer firemans assoc and/or advice if the original engine was restored for parades???
C'mon, guys, use your heads--if I was looking for an engine like that, I'd've contacted City Hall, the local Fire Dept if they have one, the pub library and the local Historical Assoc, plus the above, just to start...
