Hello Chris,
The oldest internal combustion engine in Australia is in the Sydney Powerhouse Museum. It is an Otto Langen fluted column rack and pinion. The engine would have been built in the 1860s. The engine can be seen on Wayne Grennings webpage : http://wgrenning.googlepages.com/ott...erengines-12hp Regards, Wayne www.bluefuel-whitesmoke.com |

Australia also has an 18th century steam engine - A Boulton and Watt Planetary if I remember...I found it because Josiah Wedgwood also had one in his factory.

The Boulton & Watt belongs to the Powerhouse Museum (who also have the Otto-Langen). The B&W dates to around 1785 and according to the museum is "the oldest rotative steam engine in the world."

Hi all, has been a bit quiet with the "loss"of the TOMM forum - so glad to find the aussie smoke stack!
My oldest engine(s): Olds gearless - not sure of hp but probably 10 -12. An early serial number which I'm guessing is late 1890s - although I'm sure they sold em later than that. Current project. Olds Type A 12 hp - a late B series engine which would be 08/09 I guess - runs. F-M jack of all trades 6hp - ?1905/06 going by the pre 1911 serial no list. Project Hornsby 9 1/2hp - definately a 1906 engine - runs check em out on Youtube - search under "mikelsjunk" Mike in Orange NSW |

Hi Chris, The top two are my Type A 12hp serial # B8022. Transport is not original. Had to make or get made a few bits to get running. The bottom pic is #2711 which is the second oldest of the 8 or so serial no.s I have for the gearless type. It looks a bit sad now but will be OK in a year or so - maybe even making a noise. The bore is 7" but as the plate is missing not sure what the HP is but is the same size as the 12Hp engine at Coolsprings - a later engine - #4715.. Mike |

Hi Chris,
No I havent seen this actual phopto but I have seen engines like this in other photos. The engine is type G which kind of looks like a Gearless but isn't. I've never seen one in Oz - doubt if they came here. Have a look at Wendells red book where it shows this engine. Thanks for posting the pic. Michael |
