I have a 1962 Clark forklift with a 4-cylinder, water cooled, flat head engine and I am trying to determine who made the motor so maybe I can find a repair manual and some parts for it. I was able to get limited info on the forklift from Clark, but no real info on the engine because of the age. The engine type on the original forklift data card has this number F162-1547.
It smokes and I would like to rebuild it because even though it was neglected for decades it is a tough well built machine. They don't build'em like that anymore! What are some good sites to go to for parts or old manuals? I just overhauled the dc generator and got it charging again (yippy). |

I've got a Clark 3000# forklift, with the same Contintental. It smokes, runs on 3 cylinders or 4. I plan to re-build it, too. It's just one of those things that when you need it, you need it. It's been low on the overhaul list but I hope I get it done within a year. I recently re-built all the hydraulic cylinders and got them working good. Some one put a one wire alternator in it so charging is not a problem. It was given to me so I can't complain. The work it has saved me, or done for me is enormous. It's just one of those things that when you need it, you can't do without it.

Found out it was a Continental F-162 just after I posted while searching the net. So you don't have a separate voltage regulator now since it has an alternator, right? If yoy com across some good places to get parts, let me know and I'll do the same.

Oh, mine has a power steering pump attached to the rear of the old genrator or I would have put an alternator on it. Does yours have a power steering pump and if so where does it mount (a pic would be nice)?

If F162 parts aren't available thru your local NAPA or whatever parts places there, many posters highly recommend Montes Eqpmt in Chicago for obsolete Cont parts, and Garrad Moon is often mentioned as the contact.
montesequipment.com garradmoon@montes@flash.net The 162 was a very popular engine (F4162 in trucks, F162 in Ag/Ind'l etc, and PF 162 in power units) but rotation was different in trks/ag etc versions. There are other places that stock obsolete Cont parts I can advise if Montes is unacceptable for any reason. |
