I assume you mean a more modern engine, easier/cheaper to get parts for.
I can't answer your question, but if no helpful advice turns up here you might try Googling for Railcar clubs/groups; NARCOA.org? (com? net?) is the only one that comes to mind (North American Railcar Owners (Operators?) Assn, I think).
Fairmont is the only mfr that comes to mind (they used the FC and XAH).
There's also an AU site, but I can't find my railcar notes.
Good luck.

Wellll...here's a long shot, if you haven't already tried it:
There's a 2003 post here re' info on a Fairmont engine, and a reply said Harsco Track Technologies, Fairmont, Minn, 503-235-7370 (I assume if they're still there they have a website) parts dept could advise date of mfr and original owner, and supply a manual.
Sounds like Harsco then had Faimont engine records and supported the engines.
If so, and they're still there or have a successor, it's possible they may have knowledge of other owners who've updated engines, and/or what engine/s they put in.
I'm not familiar with Rail cars, so my apologies if this's the first thing you tried.
